“You’re the one who scanned us in,” I pointed out.

“Maybe I stole your boss’s ID card.”

I narrowed my eyes and tilted my head, studying him. He did make a good point.

I reached for my desk phone. “I’ll call security.”

I pretended to dial some numbers, but his laugh stopped me. “Nice try. By the time security got here, I could immobilize you and tuck all your boss’s secrets away in this laptop bag.”

“My boss’s secrets?” I asked. “Do you think he just leaves them lying around in a stack on his desk? He’s like you, I’m sure. Any secret he has would be on his laptop, which never leaves his side.”

The man started toward me, and I was tempted to back up, but no way would I let him see he was getting to me. He wasn’t here to steal my boss’s secrets.

But whywashe here?

“Your boss and I have a lot in common,” he said.

He thrust out a hand, but not to grab me and tie me down—an idea that was becoming more pleasing to me by the moment. Yeah, I’d definitely like to be immobilized by this guy, but only if getting naked was part of it.

In fact, I’d love to get him naked. I could tie his hands behind his back and shove him onto my desk chair. I’d then pull down those pants and do things to him I’d only dreamed.

Either way the fantasy went, I liked it. But it was probably highly unprofessional for me to be thinking of this guy that way. For all I knew, he was a client or some sort of financial auditor. We’d never had one of those in here. Maybe that meant we were overdue.

“Trevor Rimes,” he said. “I’m your new boss.”

TREVOR

The woman standing in front of me had to be the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen. That included rainbows, snowy days, and Shoreline Lake in the summertime.

Janelle was young—probably in her early twenties. Since I was in my late thirties, that made her officially too young for me. I never dated younger women. The youngest I’d gone was thirty-five, and I’d been thirty-seven at the time.

But I couldn’t take my eyes off this woman. My attraction to her seemed to transcend age.

Those big blue eyes lowered to my hand and back to my face. I didn’t withdraw, though. I kept my arm thrust toward her, waiting for the handshake. Maybe part of me was just desperate to feel her skin against mine.

She still held my coffee cup with her left hand, but she thrust out her right and inserted her hand in mine. Her fingers slid across my palm as I tried to remember to keep it professional. What I really wanted to do was tug her toward me and see if those plump pink lips tasted as good as they looked.

“M-my boss,” she stammered as I pumped our hands up and down in a pathetic imitation of a handshake. Then I let go, mostly so I could think clearly.

“My company, CyberSword Technologies, bought out yours. The official transfer of power won’t happen until after the first of the year. I’m just here to get a feel for things.”

Her mouth dropped open slightly. She kept her eyes on me, though. She turned her head slightly to the right, back to center, then to the left. Words seemed to escape her, so I continued to blather like an idiot.

“I was in Eugene for a tech conference. That’s where your boss met with me. He agreed to sell this company to me. Corporate’s closed through the end of the year.”

I stopped there. This office should be closed too. In fact, I was thinking about sending the workers home. Nobody should be working the last week of the year.

The problem was, if I sent this stunning masterpiece of a woman out that door, I wouldn’t see her again until everyone was back at work. At that point, she’d view me as the big boss—the guy who belonged at corporate in Silicon Valley. Someone she couldn’t get to know one on one.

I looked around. “Are you the only one here?”

It was pretty obvious since the lights were still out. But our team of developers at corporate liked to work in the dark, so who knew?

“It’s just me and Sammie this week,” Janelle said.

“Sammie. Is that a man? A woman? Your pet chihuahua?”
