Oh no! She began texting Gray when her doorbell rang.Crap! She pulled on her robe and tried taming her crazy bed hair as she made her way to the door.

Peeking through the peephole, Gray stood with two cups of coffee in his hands. She groaned as she slowly opened the door.

“I didn’t know what you like, so I got chocolate mint. Hope that’s okay.”

Sam gasped and pulled her palms over her face.No makeup, hair a mess, and in a robe for goodness sake. Well, he sure wouldn’t want to go out now.She heard him chuckle. He tapped her fingers with one of his, still holding a coffee in his hand.

“I think you look cute.”

He even knew what she was thinking.

She let out an unladylike snort. “I doubt that ‘cute’ is what anyone would call me right now.” She stood back allowing him to enter. “Well, now you’ve seen what I look like in the morning. Want to turn and run?”

He handed her a cup of coffee and walked into the house. His gray dress pants and crisp white dress shirt—sleeves rolled up a couple turns—was a pleasant sight first thing in the morning. His shirt had a slight shimmer to it and fit snuggly, just enough to show off his physique. He wasn’t in body-builder shape, but he was fit and trim for a man in his fifties. And right now, watching him walk into her living room, she got a nice view of his great behind. Her face flushed. Gray spoke, breaking into her thoughts.

“Nope, I’m here because you didn’t answer my texts last night and I was worried you had changed your mind. I knew I wouldn’t be able to concentrate at work today if I didn’t speak with you and know what you were thinking.”

Sam followed him into the living room where he sat on the sofa making himself right at home. She followed him into the living room, trying to flatten the cowlick in her hair with one hand and holding her coffee in the other.

“I’m so sorry, Gray. I was just reading your texts. After you left last night, I soaked in a nice warm bath, and when I finished I realized how tired I was, so I went straight to bed. I didn’t hear my phone chirp at all. I’m sorry—I didn’t mean to worry you.”

He exhaled and flashed a big, beautiful smile. “Great! I thought you’d decided not to see me anymore. I tossed and turned all night, worrying about it. I’m so relieved you haven’t changed your mind.”

He just took her breath away. She could feel herself being swept away by this man and it was scary as hell. She faintly smiled. She wasn’t a morning person, but she was trying.

“If you still want to go out with me when you know what I look like without makeup and with my hair looking all crazy in the morning, I still want to go out with you. I’m sorry I made you worry. I didn’t sleep much Tuesday night after our date, and I guess it caught up with me last night.”

Gray’s perfect lips formed a sly smile as he leaned forward. “Were you thinking about me?”

Pfft, he knew darn good and well that she was thinking about him. So now he just needed his ego stroked a little.

“Naw, I was thinking about time travel.”

She smiled then sipped her coffee. He frowned and sat back which made her laugh. “Of course, I was thinking about you. You can’t kiss a girl like you kissed me and believe she isn’t going to think about you.”

He grinned as he stood up and walked toward the door. Sam followed, enjoying the view of his fabulously toned behind. When he walked, his butt wiggled a little. He turned around suddenly and caught her staring at his butt. He tilted his head and raised an eyebrow in amusement. She turned beet red and shrugged her shoulders.

“You’re the one who came over here dressed all sexy and everything. You can’t blame a girl for noticing.”

He got a hearty laugh out of that one. “So, now you think I’m sexy?”

She shook her head. “I doubt you don’t already know that, Gray. I saw the way other women looked at you when we were out on Tuesday. I’m sure finding random women was very easy for you.”

Gray’s smile immediately faded.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for that to come out so sarcastic. I simply meant that you are a very attractive, sexy man. I would have to be blind to not think so. I apologize if it sounded insensitive. “

He nodded his head, but she could see some doubt there. They stood for a minute looking at each other, trying to gauge what the other was thinking when Sam reached up and touched his face.

“I’m sorry, really. That information is so fresh, and it was out of my mouth before I even thought how that was going to sound. I’m truly sorry, Gray.”

He leaned down and kissed her softly. “I understand. I hate that I can’t change that, Sam; I really do. If for one minute I ever thought I would meet you, I would change everything in my past to be different for you.”

His regret for his past seemed so sincere, and it touched her heart.

“Gray, neither one of us can change what happened in the past. If we could, I doubt we’d be the people we are right now—for bad or good. Please don’t dwell on that. I promise I’ll try very hard to not dwell on it.”

Gray smiled. “I’ll see you at six o’clock then. And, since you didn’t answer my question, how about I cook for you tonight? Besides, I’m excited for you to see my house.”
