Sam smiled and looked up at him. “Great, I’ll be there at six. Can I bring something?”

“Nope, I’ve got this one. I’ll email you my address and directions. See you then.”

He was out the door and jumping into his SUV in a heartbeat. Looking back, he waved as he backed out of the driveway. She let out a long, heavy sigh. Not only had he seen her without makeup and with bed head, but she'd also offended him. She’d need to be careful to not let his past bother her, and she certainly didn’t want to throw it in his face all the time. After all, he’d been honest with her. That took trust and courage on his part, and she needed to respect that. It bothered her in that even though she believed he had regrets when a person can justify things, they tend to be repeat offenders.

Sam sipped on her delicious coffee as she got ready for work.

Gray chuckled as he drove to the office. She was cute with her hair all mussed up from sleeping. He only wished he’d been sleeping with her. He was going to change that tonight. He was happy she hadn’t changed her mind about going out with him—something he laid awake thinking about last night.

Shit! This was crazy to be so hung up on a woman so fast. But, the more time he spent with her, the more time he wanted to spend with her. She had already taken over every waking moment of his time since he met her. He had a hard time concentrating at work; he had a hard time concentrating at home. In a word, he was fucked! He felt restless and unsteady until he saw her. This morning he’d been awake at three a.m., just waiting for the clock to reach a reasonable time to go to her house so he wouldn’t freak her out.

The second she opened the door, it took all he had not to grab her and haul her to the bedroom and fuck her. She probably didn’t have anything on under that robe, either. He groaned at the thought. It made his dick throb and twitch. Tonight, he would have her in his bed. He was sure of that.

Arriving at the office early, Sam popped into Bill’s office. “Morning. Just wanted to let you know we’ll be cracking on the trial documents today and have them compiled and bound for you by noon. And, I’d like to leave at three today.”

Bill, the firm’s lead attorney—her boss of five years and Gray’s friend—looked up from his paperwork and smiled. “Morning. Thanks, and of course you can leave early, you know that.”

She smiled at this kind man; she enjoyed working for him—a couple of the other partners, not so much, but Bill was wonderful. “Thanks, I appreciate it.”

She waved as she continued to her office. It was hard not to smile with the happiness surrounding her today.

“So, plan’s tonight?” Jessie asked as she met her in the hall, making an air quote movement with her fingers.

The smile on Sam’s face never faltered. She stepped into her office, Jessie on her heels. “I’m going to Gray’s for dinner.”

Sam only smiled, but Jess jumped right in.

“Ooh, his house for ‘dinner,’ of course.” There were those damned air quotes again. “How exciting for you.”

Jess turned to leave, then stopped at the door, and said, “I can’t wait to hear all about it.”

She shook her head as Jess walked away.

At three o’clock, Sam quietly left her office and slipped out the back door. She didn’t want to answer any questions, and she was both nervous and excited to get home and freshen up for her date. Traffic was light, and the sun had come out today, even though it was still cool outside for April. They hadn’t broken the fifty-degree mark in days; however, the sun was beautiful and lifted her spirits. Sam walked into her house and went straight to the bedroom. She started the shower and looked through her closet for something to wear.

She chose a nice pair of jeans, a darker blue color with some fading on the butt cheeks and upper legs. They had nice detailing on the back pockets—just a little bling. She found a long-sleeved, bright pink T-shirt that was slightly see-through but with mottling in it that camouflaged the transparency, while it still left something to the imagination. She finished off with her cool, black peep-toe shoe booties with rhinestones across the top and front. They gave her some height and made her legs look longer and leaner. It was amazing what clothes could do for a girl.

After dressing, she styled her short hair. It was an easy style to work with, but there were times she’d wake with it sticking up all over her head. She hoped Gray hadn’t thought about that all day. Now for a little makeup and away we go. There was plenty of time. It was five-ish, and, according to the address and directions he’d sent, he lived only about ten minutes from Sam’s house in the same part of Harmony Lake. Funny they lived this close to each other and had never met before.

Wanting to do something special for Gray, she zipped over to Cheesecake Haven and picked up dessert for tonight. Keeping it simple, since she didn’t know what he liked or what he was making, she decided on a French Vanilla cheesecake with chocolate sauce and cherries, and of course, whipped cream for garnish.

When she pulled into Gray’s driveway, her mouth fell open at the beautiful landscaping, abundant hardscapes, and winding walkways. She could see perennials starting to pop up, even in the cold spring. She’d have to ask if he enjoyed working in the yard or if he had someone work with him. His brick driveway curved around the beautiful landscape up to the gorgeous house—a sprawling brick ranch with a great wraparound porch. Rocking chairs with a table between them added just the right amount of homey atmosphere.

She took a deep breath, then opened her car door. Gray stepped off the porch, and her heartbeat sped up. He wore jeans that fit him well—very well, in fact—and a black, long-sleeve T-shirt. It made her want to touch him—all over. She could see the full outline of his body revealing his great build. This was going to be a long dinner. When he smiled at her, her face flushed and her knees grew weak. She took a couple of steps toward him, and when they reached each other, he put his arms around her and picked her up off the ground in a big bear hug. She threw her arms around his neck, not only to hang on but because she wanted to get as close to him as she could. They lingered there for a bit, lost in each other’s touch.

When he finally set her down, he leaned in and kissed her, immediately dipping his tongue into her mouth. He pulled her so close there wasn’t a place their bodies weren’t touching. He slanted his head to the side allowing their mouths to fit together perfectly. The skill he used to kiss her was intoxicating.

She slid her palms down and back up his arms, then cupped the back of his head and held him close. He left one hand on the small of her back, keeping her close to him, and slid his other hand up to the back of her head, holding her head in place while he continued exploring her mouth with his tongue. She kissed him back—stroke for stroke—her tongue following his lead. Perfect. Just kissing him made her tingle everywhere. The long, dormant feelings of desire he’d awakened in her were heady. They pulled away from each other and Gray rested his forehead against hers. Time to let her heart stop racing.

“Sam, I’m always amazed at what you do to me.”

She laughed. “I feel the same about you. We’re screwed, I guess!”

He stepped back and looked her over. It was a bit disconcerting the way he stared. She nervously shuffled on her feet until he finally spoke.
