Her lips formed a soft smile. “It’s a little scary. But it’s also hot, and if you like it, I’d do it anyway to make you happy.”

He raised his brows. “Sam, I don’t want you to pretend anything for me. It has to be what we both want, or it won’t work. Promise me. Remember, you’re the one who keeps saying ‘open and honest.’”

She nodded. “I promise.”

He kissed her again and sighed heavily. “You make me feel so good. I never dreamed I could feel content. But I do with you. I never have before, Sam. Never.”

She put her arms around his shoulders and slid her hands into his hair staring into his eyes. “I’m so sorry you’ve never felt content, Gray. That’s very sad, but I’m so glad that I can make you feel that way. As long as you don’t get bored with feeling content.”

She smiled, and he chuckled. “I’ll never get bored with this feeling. I’ve longed for it my whole life.”

She hugged him close for a long time. He moved to slide off her and grabbed tissues to clean them up. She couldn’t wait to snuggle back up to him.

Gray pulled her close, and she eagerly snuggled into him. She closed her eyes as both of his arms wrapped around her, but then her stomach growled and spoiled the moment.

She giggled. “I’m sorry. My tummy is being a pest.”

He laughed and said, “I’m getting hungry, too.”

They got up, and Sam bent over to grab her clothes.

Gray said, “No, no, wear one of my T-shirts. They’re in the top drawer. I like the way you look in them.”

She giggled. “I doubt it’s that you like the way I look and more the convenience of it, but I like wearing them, so I won’t fuss.”

He shrugged his shoulders and pulled on a pair of pajama pants.

They found roast beef from the night before last in the refrigerator and made sandwiches, then sat at the table and talked about the things they wanted to do at the office and on the fourth floor and put together a plan of attack.

“Go ahead and come up with ideas, then we can discuss them. I’ll check and see what can and can’t be done per code and ADA restrictions. We’ll go from there.”

“What’s my budget?”

“As long as you don’t go overboard, we should be fine. Besides, if you intend to use a lot of reclaimed pieces, it shouldn’t break the bank.”

“But there must be some limits. Gray, I’ve never worked without a budget. What if I do something wrong?”

“Sam, please don’t worry. I’ll be right here all the time. I’ll be helping you with the refinishing. If something looks out of place or it seems as though it’s getting expensive, we’ll talk.”

All in all, she was looking forward to it, but it was going to be a lot of work. She’d work at the law office during the day and have to spend evenings refinishing pieces and working out plans with Gray for the second and third floors. But they would be doing it together, and that would be fun, too.

The sunlight filtered into the bedroom and draped itself across Gray’s chest, warming it and waking him. He cracked open his eyes and inhaled deeply, immediately recognizing Sam’s perfume. The musky scent was now imprinted on his brain and would forever make him think of her. Best smell ever. That was something, wasn’t it? Throughout the night last night, he’d woken up and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to him so he could drift off to sleep once more. His heart was full right now; it seemed like life was finally working in his favor. ‘Bout damned time.

Sam lifted her head to glance at the clock on the dresser, then nestled into her pillow once more with a sigh.

It was nearly impossible not to smile as he watched her. “I’ll go get us coffee if you want to sit in bed and drink it while you relax.”

Sam sighed. “That sounds great. I hope you plan on joining me.”

Gray chuckled. She hadn’t even opened her eyes. “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything else knowing you were in my bed ... naked.”

She hummed and let out a deep breath. He pulled on his favorite pajama pants, the black ones with light gray pinstripes, and sauntered down the hallway to the kitchen. The timer had gone off on the coffeepot, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled his lungs and made him groan in delight. Best smell ever. No, wait, second best smell ever.

He enjoyed pouring two cups of coffee, each with a splash of creamer added. They even drank their coffee the same. Carrying the cups back to the bedroom, he envisioned this being every morning and he liked the way that looked.

He set her cup on the bedside table, setting a napkin and two cookies next to her cup. Unable to stop himself, he kissed her soft lips before saying, “Rise and shine baby. We need to decide what to do today.”
