“I guess I can’t blame her for wanting you back … youarekind of incredible.”

Gray furrowed his brows. “What makes you think she wants me back?”

Sam shrugged her shoulders. “Why else would she ask you to lunch unannounced? You said she had married someone else a short while after she broke up with you. If you were just friends, she would have emailed and said, ‘Hey, I’m coming to town; want to get together for lunch?’ But she just stopped in, so she could catch you off guard. Am I wrong?”

Gray shook his head in disbelief. “That brain of yours is incredible.”

He took a deep breath.

“Yes, she wanted to know if I was seeing anyone, and I told her I was. She asked if I ever thought about her, and I was honest and told her no, I didn’t. She took that kind of hard, but I didn’t want her to get the wrong idea. She asked me if I thought you were the one, and I told her we haven’t been dating very long, but yes, I knew you were very special from the minute I laid eyes on you and that I love you very much.”

Sam kissed him again, longer and deeper this time. Gray reached his hand up and wrapped it around the nape of her neck and held her there. When she started to end the kiss, he deepened it. She slid her hands into his hair and held his head. They kissed until they were breathless. Needing air, Gray laid his forehead against hers.

“I’m sorry you were thrown, Sam. I was about to call you when you called me. She was sitting in my office, and I told her you and I had talked about having lunch today. When I saw it was you on my phone, I asked her if I could have a minute to speak with you and she got up and waited outside. I wouldn’t have lied to you—I need you to know that.”

Sam pulled back to look into his eyes; he looked sincere, and she believed him. Nodding, she asked, “Are we going to have trouble with her?”

Gray smirked. “I don’t think so. Her husband was killed in a car accident about a year ago, and she’s just feeling lonely. But she knows there’s nothing between us. I made it very clear that I loveyou.”

He stood with a slight groan. “I have to get back to the office, but I’ll see you at home around five-fifteen, okay?”

“Yes, I’ll be there.”

He kissed her again and walked out the door. She decided to finish her shopping therapy and get back to work. About an hour later, she got an email.

Apparently, her wit had taken a nap. She’d been teetering between being pissed and scared that Cheryl could come and win him back. He said he wasn’t interested in her, but what if absencedidmake the heart grow fonder?
