Sam turned caught Adam’s gaze with hers. Unable to speak, she simply stared.

“She had a heart attack today and died before they ever got her to the hospital.”

Sam nodded her understanding and noticed Eric watching them. “Okay,” she replied. Eric furrowed his brow and looked at both of them again, waiting for a reaction.

Adam told Eric about their mother. He was always more open about their family dynamics. He would get angry with their parents, and that’s how he dealt with it. Sam, on the other hand, kept her feelings bottled up inside. She didn’t want anyone to know about their family.

He cleared his throat. “I’m very sorry … for all of it.”

They both shrugged. They’d both been numb to her for so long that they didn’t have any emotion over the news of her death. It was almost a relief.

Sam cleared her throat. “I suppose we’re going to have to clean out her apartment and talk to her landlord, right?”

Adam nodded, and they both sat quietly, lost in their thoughts.

Eric said, “I’m going to give you a shot to numb your arm so I can clean it and stitch it up. Okay?”

Sam sat quietly, staring into space.

“Sam, did you hear me? I need to make sure you don’t have any glass in your wound.”

Sam looked at Eric and nodded. He handed her a rolled-up rag and told her to squeeze it. She did as he asked and when he stuck her with the needle close to the wound, she jumped.

“Ouch! Shit, Eric, that hurts!”

“Sorry, you’ll be numb in a minute. Breathe through it, Sam.”

She took a couple more breaths and soon her arm was numb. How could a person’s life be so completely turned around in a day and a half?

A couple of hours later, Sam had twenty-three stitches. Eric said he put a lot of little stitches in to try and minimize the scarring. Adam had his ankle wrapped up, and they sat in the living room, deep in thought. Finally, Sam took another deep breath.

“I’ll go tomorrow and speak with her landlord. Do you have keys to her place? I suppose we should take a look at how much stuff she has. Then what? Do we need to contact the hospital? What do we do now? I guess I’ll call the office in the morning and speak with our probate attorney, Jane, and see what she thinks we should do.”

She rambled out her thoughts as they came to her, unable to organize them.

Adam nodded. “I have keys, and I’ll go with you. Why don’t you stay here tonight and we’ll go in the morning and figure everything out?”

“Well, I’m going to go home then. You all look like you need some sleep.” Eric stood to leave. Everyone else had left when all the medical attention started taking place. Way to kill a party!

Sam nodded. “Thank you, Eric, for all of your medical attention. It was a pleasure meeting you though I wish it would have ended differently.” A small smile creased her face. She stood and followed him into the kitchen.

“It was a pleasure meeting you as well, Sam. I’ll check on you in the morning.”

“What do I owe you for making a house call?”

He turned and looked at her. “Would you have dinner with me?”

Really? Another great looking, nice man wanted to have dinner with her. This last one had her on the roller coaster ride of her life.

She smiled weakly. “I’m just getting out of a relationship. I’m sorry. I’m just not ready right now. I hope you understand.”

He nodded. “I do, but I’ll be asking again. I called in an antibiotic for you. You’ll need to stop off at the pharmacy and pick up your prescription first thing in the morning. I want to see you in a day or two to make sure there’s no infection in your stitches.”

“I promise. I’ll call and set up an appointment.” He handed her a business card.

She waved as he left through the garage by way of the kitchen door and walked across the lawn to his house.

Adam and Janie started making their way to bed. Sam had stayed here before and knew how to help herself.
