“Do you guys need anything?” she asked, as she watched Janie help Adam up the stairs.

“No, we’ll see you in the morning. Make yourself at home, Sam.”

She crawled into her bed without turning on her phone. She didn’t even want to know how many messages she had now.

The next morning Sam woke to her arm throbbing like a beast. She’d forgotten to ask Eric if she could get the stitches wet. The smell of the campfire from last night hung in her hair, and she and Adam had a full day ahead of them. She carefully rolled out of bed and padded to the bathroom to turn on the shower. She decided she’d take a quick shower and wash the stitches off a little. Then she’d check to see what medical supplies Janie had to cover them up. She showered quickly and did the best she could with her hair. Luckily, Adam and Janie had company often, and the bathroom was fully appointed with a blow dryer and curling iron.

She didn’t spend any time with the curling iron, but she used the blow dryer, attempting to make her hair behave. She put her dirty clothes on from yesterday, though they were sticky where Adam’s drink had spilled. At leastshewas clean. When she made her way upstairs, Janie and Julie were in the kitchen. Julie was sitting at the breakfast counter, and Janie was making breakfast.

“Hey there, kiddo; you really know how to throw a party.” Sam smiled at her niece and gave her a little hug before sitting next to her at the counter.

Janie looked at Sam. “How are you feeling?”

“My arm hurts like a bitch, and my clothes are stiff and sticky, but otherwise I’m great.”

Janie chuckled at Sam’s feigned positive attitude. She walked over to the table where Janie had set out a pair of sweat pants and a T-shirt, along with medical supplies and pain reliever.

“I don’t really have any clothes that will fit you, but I thought if you wanted to wear clean clothes, you could pull these on and Julie can help you doctor up your stitches. I have something that might take the edge off the pain too.”

Sam smiled at her. “Thank you, Janie. I really appreciate it.”

She clutched the clothes to her chest and strolled to the downstairs bathroom to change. When she came out of the bathroom, she could hear Adam grunting and groaning as he was making his way down the stairs. She ambled to the end of the staircase and looked up at him, a nonchalant smile on her face.

“Party too hard last night?”

Adam looked down at her. “You’re not funny.”

She shrugged. She thought she was damn clever.

“Do you need help?”

Adam shook his head and continued to slowly make his way down the last few steps.

“My ankle is swollen like a bitch, and I have a headache.”

Sam shook her head and held up her arm with the stitches. “Throbs like a bitch.”

They grinned at the other as they made their way into the kitchen. Julie stood and motioned for Sam to sit at the table so she could apply some antibiotic ointment to her stitches and wrap her arm in fresh gauze.

Sam looked at their medical kit and noticed it had everything in it. “Quite the medical kit you have here.”

Julie smiled. “Dr. Anderson left it last night in case we needed anything. He said he would stop over before he heads to the hospital today to see if our patients are okay.”

“What time is it anyway?”

Janie looked at the clock. “Six-thirty. Do you two need me to go with you today to your mom’s place?”

Sam glanced at Adam. He shook his head no. If he didn’t think so, Sam didn’t care. Janie had a very level head on her shoulders and would be very helpful to have with them, but she didn’t need to deal with their mother’s crap, too, so Sam shook her head no. They would take care of their mother’s things themselves, as they always had.

Breakfast was served, and while it smelled fantastic, she simply wasn’t hungry and only nibbled on a piece of fruit. The last time she ate something was on Saturday at lunch with Gray. It was now Monday, and she hadn’t seen Gray since Saturday evening. So much had happened since then. She supposed sheshouldlisten to her voicemails, but her stomach lurched at the thought. She didn’t want to hear his apologies right now. In her mind, three people in a relationship were one too many. He was still allowing Suzanne to manipulate him and she didn’t want any part of it. But it hurt like hell.

Adam looked over at Sam. “You okay?”

She nodded. “What time do you want to leave?”

“We can get rolling anytime. If the office isn’t open when we get there, we can go to Mom’s apartment and see what we’re dealing with first.”
