Of course, he was sleeping when they entered his room. Monitors beeped and blipped and IV lines ran from their respective bag of potion to his arm. She watched the heart monitor for a long time, loving the fact that it never wavered, his heart was steady and strong. They whispered as they spoke, not wanting to wake Harry up. Mary sat next to the bed, holding his hand. Sam couldn’t imagine what was going through her mind all day. She was wrecked herself and Harry wasn’t her husband.

Gray called Sarah and Cole and checked in at the office, and Sam needed to go through her voicemails and clean them out. That was going to be hard. They chatted quietly with Mary, telling her they would be back later in the evening. She and Gray left after hugs and goodbyes. The ride home was quiet. When they arrived home, Gray went straight to his office, and Sam sat on the sofa to listen to her voicemail.

She had forty-one messages from Gray and one from Shelia, simply asking Sam to give her a call whenever she could.

Tears streamed down her face by the time she finished listening to all her messages. The pain in his voice was awful. And she finally got it, she’d been selfish in her behavior, and that was inexcusable. She was old enough to know better. She’d keep her promise and never run away again. Gray walked into the room and saw her crying. He came over, sat next to her, and pulled her to him.

“Are you okay, baby?”

She nodded.

“I just listened to my voicemails. I’m so sorry Gray; I was very selfish for not at least letting you know I was okay. Please forgive me.”

Gray sighed. “We hurt each other badly, Sam. I’ll do everything in my power to never hurt you again.”

Sam hugged him tightly. “Me too. I do love you.”

“I love you, too, Sam.”

They sat quietly, holding hands and staring ahead.

Finally, Gray broke the silence.

“You were wrong about Dr. Anderson, you know. He has feelings for you.”

Sam sighed. “I’ve only known him for about four days, and in that four days, I’ve only spent about eight hours total with him. Most of that time was him stitching me up and working on Adam. I highly doubt that he has feelings for me.”

Gray pulled away from her to look into her eyes. “I fell in love with you the moment I saw you.”

Sam leaned in and kissed him.

“I fell in love with you in that same moment, and I’m still in love with you and only you.”

The following week Gray and Sam spent most of their time at his house, talking and working through things.

Gray admitted, “I’ve always caved into Suzanne because it was easier to let her manipulate me than it was to watch her hurt the people I care about.”

“That’s so sad.” She kissed his lips, and the flutter his heart made gave him a thrill.

“So, my uncle’s granddaughter is getting married in two weeks, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Suzanne will be in attendance. The bride’s mother is friendly with her. I think we can do this, don’t you? Be in the same room with her?”

“Yes, I think we can do this, Gray. Absolutely; it’ll be a second chance.”

Later he worked on the business side of things at Kinkaide & Associates; he was behind after their botched night out on the town. Sam was off shopping for the wedding with the Kinkaide women. He poured over a form he’d found online after he and Ethan had chatted about needing more structure at the firm.

“Aww, that looks very interesting. I’m sorry to interrupt your reading.” Sam’s sweet voice floated over him.

He looked up and smiled warmly.

“Please, please interrupt me.”

He chuckled as he stood and walked toward her. He pulled her into the office and Amanda appeared at the door.

“Gray, I’m so sorry, she just walked right in.”

He glanced at her and sighed. “Amanda, Sam never has to be announced, and she can always walk right in. I don’t care if I have a room full of people, this woman is welcome anytime.”
