Smiling, she replied, “Hey there, yourself. I’m fine, how about you?”

His sexy voice floated over her, creating gooseflesh; she loved this feeling. “I was just sitting here thinking about this sexy little gal I’m in love with and what I want to do to her when I get her home tonight. Hmm, I can’t wait to get her home.”

Wow! The butterflies came alive in her tummy. “Ooh, I can’t wait to get home. That sounds simply fabulous,” she purred. “I just came into some money and am going to the bank to make a deposit. I thought I would call and let you know what I was doing.”

Taking a deep breath, he responded, “Sam, please don’t do that. Let someone else go to the bank or let me come and take you. Please don’t go alone.”

Sam was quiet for a moment. She turned to look out the big window at the front of the office. The sun shined brightly outside; people were walking on the sidewalks, shopping bags in their hands, dressed in summer fashion all with carefree looks on their faces. She wanted to go outside and play again.

“Sam, let me come and take you to the bank then we can go home early. How about that?”

“I don’t want to disrupt your day, Gray. I just thought I would give you a call and let you know I wanted to walk to the bank. Actually, Jessie made me call you.”

She heard a chuckle. “I’ll be there in five minutes. Don’t leave that building. I’ll take you to the bank, and then I’d like to take you to Mom and Dad’s. Don’t leave. Do you understand me?”

“Yes, I understand. I’ll wait for you.” Sam sighed.

Ending the call, she looked at Jessie, “Happy now?”

“Yes.” Jessie leaned forward placing her arms on the top of the upper counter of the reception desk. “I have a date tonight. It’s our fourth. I’m so excited.”

“Well, I hope this is the one. You haven’t said anything about him. What’s going on with you?”

“This one is different. I never would have dreamed of him. But, I just don’t want to jinx it, so I’m waiting a bit to talk about him.”

Sam chuckled. “Okay. Fair enough.”

Gray entered the office and seeing him walk through the door where she’d first met him made her tummy flip. The smile she bestowed on him was genuine.

“Hello, sexy, what do you say we blow this place and go have some fun?”

Sam laughed. “You got it.”

Jessie rolled her eyes and ordered, “Get out of my reception area. You two kill me.”

With a chuckle, Sam said, “Have fun tonight, Jess.” Gray took her hand and led her out to his SUV.

They drove through the bank auto-bank, and Sam deposited the proceeds from the house. Gray stated, “Buckle up, we’re headed to Mom and Dad’s.”

“I thought you were making other plans when I called?”

He leveled her with a panty-melting grin. “I’ve made plans for you, and we’ll get to those in a little while. Mom has something to show you first.”

She furrowed her brows. “Okay.”

He chuckled and drove out of town.

They walked into Gray’s parents’ house a few minutes later. Harry and Mary sat at the kitchen counter drinking lemonade. They’d been outside working in the flower gardens and were taking a break. Mary jumped up and offered Gray and Sam a glass of lemonade, and they sat making small talk.

Harry asked, “Has there been any word on the man who hit Sam?”

“No, nothing yet. But I keep in touch with the police department. I don’t want that to keep us from moving forward, though. We aren’t putting our lives on hold because of some jackass out there who can’t even speak to me face-to-face and attacks my girlfriend instead.”

“What makes you think it’s about you?” she asked.

He turned in his chair and stared at her. “Because you didn’t have any enemies until I came along. Now you’ve been mowed down in the street and been treated poorly. It must be because of me.”

She sat back and raised her brows. “Not everything is about you, Gray.”
