Eva told him about the party. Jamie glanced at Gray, his eyebrows raised. The girls quieted and waited for him to say something.

With hands on her hips, Jessie looked to him and said, “Gray, you have to let us throw her a bachelorette party. It must be done. Since you’re pushing her down the aisle as fast as you can, we have limited time, so wehaveto do it this Saturday! You’re getting married on the following Saturday.”

He shook his head. “It isn’t that I don’t want you all to have fun with Sam or Sam not to have fun. It isn’t safe, Jess. I can’t risk Sam getting hurt. I can’t.” His voice cracked, and he swallowed rapidly to clear away the fear that threatened to clog his throat.

Sam walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his waist.

“It’s okay, Gray, maybe we can just have a sleepover or something.”

Sam looked at the other girls, and they all began squealing again.

“Sleepover, sleepover, sleepover,” they chanted.

He looked down at Sam and whispered in her ear, “What on earth have you done?”

“Dad, a sleepover certainly can’t be bad.” Sarah had her hands on her hips, getting ready for battle.

He held his hand up. “Easy girls. Yes, if you’re at our house where we have security and Tank or Shane, you can have a sleepover there. I can stay with Jamie,” he said looking at Jamie. Jamie nodded.

The girls continued giggling and making plans.

Dani spoke up. “Don’t forget, tomorrow is July fourth. Nick and I put on a picnic and fireworks every year, and we expect to see you all there. Four o’clock!”

Gray and Sam said their goodbyes with the promise they would all get together for lunch at Kinkaide & Associates in two days to discuss the wedding. They would have sandwiches catered in so no one had to do any cooking and cleaning. The conference room would be perfect for that, and they’d have security there.

Shane drove them tonight, so they climbed into the back of the SUV owned by Haggerty Security. It was a big, black Chevy Suburban with all the bells and whistles. The computers alone were staggering. There were weapons and tracking devices stashed all over, bulletproof windows, and of course, it was wired to the max with Bluetooth, an excellent sound system, and the dashboard looked like the cockpit of an airplane. Shane knew where everything was, though—he mastered the controls like he was born to do it.

He had his arm around Sam’s shoulders and leaned in to kiss her temple, taking the opportunity to breath in deep. He loved her smell.

“What’s going through that head of yours?” he whispered against her neck.

She shrugged. “Nothing.”

“It looks like something. As soon as I said I would stay with Jamie, your expression changed. I thought you liked Jamie. Did Jess say something to make you think differently?”

She shook her head. “No. It’s just my insecurities rearing their ugly heads. I’ll be fine.”

She sure didn’t sound fine. “Hey, what insecurities?”

She took a deep breath and blew it back out.

“When you said you were staying with Jamie I had this ugly thought that you two would go out and look for women together like you used to. I wondered if you missed that time with him and would revert to old behaviors. Sorry.”

He wrapped both of his arms around her and squeezed her tight.

“Oh baby, don’t you get it? I love you. I only want you. The thought of being with another woman never enters my mind. Jamie and I went out together because it was something to do. We enjoyed spending time together. Yes, sometimes we met women. It filled a need, a release, but nothing else. Besides, I think Jamie is pretty hung up on Jessie. And we won’t be going out; we’ll be at his house with the other guys. I’m not sure if it’s safe for me to be out either, so we’ll just sit around and play poker and watch movies or drink and shoot the breeze.”

A tear trickled down Sam’s cheek. He reached over and wiped the tear tracks from her cheek.

“I’m sorry I’m pushing you so hard, Sam. I just love you so much; I can’t wait to call you my wife. I want it now. I know it seems silly because I know you’re mine, but I’ve waited so long to find you that I just want you to be mine—legally, emotionally, and physically—in every way.”

She laid her head on his shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist.

“I know, Gray. I appreciate that you love me. I love you, too. I’m sorry for being so ridiculous.”

“You’re not ridiculous; you’re human.”

They entered the house and looked around, waiting for something to happen. Shane chuckled and went to the office with a nod. He walked to the kitchen and flipped on the lights. “Go relax on the sofa, and I’ll bring you a glass of wine.”
