Gray jumped up. “No she doesn’t—“

“We didn’t say it was true, Gray.”

David looked over at Tank. “What was your assessment of Cheryl today?”

Tank nodded. “I agree. The instant she came over she was sizing you up—checking out her competition. When you dropped the bomb that Gray had proposed, she was obviously shocked, her eyes narrowed and darkened when she watched you two. When Gray kissed you, she looked murderous. Her facial expression changed immediately when either of you looked at her—acting, unstable, plotting. I think she’s definitely capable of killing you. You stand in her way and she’s clearly not rational. Plus, if you hadn’t dove out of the way when she hit you, she could very well have killed you.”

David stood up. “Tank and I will be in the kitchen. I’m going to turn on the deck lights just outside the windows here, so if she would be able to get past the security system, we’ll see her out there when it gets dark. If she lurks in the shadows, that’s one thing, but she won’t get close without us seeing her in the light. Just in case she has a gun, let’s stay away from windows and keep a low profile. Do your best to try and give the appearance of life as usual, so if she is watching, she won’t know we’re onto her.” Gray stood up and ran his hands through his hair.

“Let’s go to a hotel or somewhere. I want Sam safe. I’m not comfortable here anymore.”

Tank stood up and put his hand on Gray’s shoulder.

“If we go to a hotel, we tip her off that we’re onto her. Our goal here is to help the police get her if they find evidence, which we think they will. David’s and my goal here is to keep you and Sam safe. Here we have a phenomenal security system. David and I are here, and we have people in place at the office monitoring the cameras, computers, everything. It’s safer here than if she followed us to a hotel where we wouldn’t have the added security. These smaller precautions are simply just in case.”

Gray nodded. Tank and David walked into the kitchen. They were probably right. He sat back down on the edge of the sofa and Sam rubbed his back.

She leaned forward and whispered in his ear, “I love you. We’re going to be fine. I’m going to make you put up with me for years and years.”

He turned and wrapped his arms around her pulling her close.

“Now what? Do you want to take a shower?”

She nodded. He looked over to the kitchen where Tank and David sat at the table with their laptops open, monitoring the security cameras and messaging with the office.

“Sam and I are going to take a shower and change for bed.” David and Tank nodded but didn’t look up.

They walked to the bedroom, and she pulled yoga pants, a T-shirt and underwear from her drawers. Gray grabbed pajama pants and a T-shirt, and they walked into the bathroom and locked the door. He turned the shower on to let the water warm up, turned to her, as she took her shirt off and was working on her pants. He walked over and hugged her.

“I told you, I’m going to make you put up with me for the rest of your life. Years and years, you’re going to wake up in the morning and think,What on earth have I done to myself? We have security, protection, the police are looking for her, and we have each other. We’re fine, Gray. We’llbefine.”

After making love, he took her hand and brought her under the water to rinse her off. When they were finished, they stepped out of the shower and dried off, dressed in the clothes they’d brought in with them, then stepped out after she dried her hair.

They walked into the living room, a quick look at the clock told Sam it was eight-thirty. If she went to bed this early, she’d be up way too early in the morning. She grabbed her laptop from the case lying by the sofa and thought she’d check Facebook and see what’s happening with friends and family.

“I’m going to go talk to David and Tank a little bit. I’ll sit with you in a little while. Okay?”

Sam looked into his eyes. “Is there anything you’re not telling me?”

“No, I just want to know if they have anything new and to reassure myself that everything is good.”

She smiled and nodded.

Gray woke early in the morning to noise. He was on his side spooning Sam, holding her as close to him as possible. He lay there for a moment before hearing, “Jesus, she’s bat shit crazy.”

His heart hammered as his eyes scanned the horizon just outside the window, must be talking about Cheryl. Sam stirred, and he pulled her tighter to his chest, loving the feel of her soft body against his. She rolled over so she was facing him and he quickly pulled her close again.

“Hey you, how did you sleep?”

Her soft sleepy smile was a sight to behold. Simply sexy. “Once I snuggled in next to you, I slept great. You?”

She nodded. “Pretty good. Did you just hear what Tank said?”

He took a breath. “Yeah, I was going to get up and see what they’d found, but I didn’t want to wake you up. Do you want some coffee?”

“Yeah, I’ll get up with you. I want to know, too.”
