Noah: Sounds good. See ya then, Lucy ??

I stand and stretch before taking the stairs to my room two at a time. My hands are a little sweaty and my stomach is in knots, but as I turn on my shower a few minutes later I realize I’ve spent almost the entire day without feeling like breaking down. I remember what Wyatt said, about how one day it’ll start to suck less, and I wonder if maybe he was right.

Chapter Four

Wyatt

“Dude, you’vebeenstaringat the girl for five minutes. Just go talk to her.” Alex rolls his eyes.

“I can’t decide if I should, she’s with friends.” I shrug.

I watch Lucy across the restaurant. She’s sitting with friends, smiling and laughing. I recognize one girl from her dad’s funeral, the blonde with the dark jeans and a tank top she walked in with, but I don’t know the other two girls, or the three guys she’s sitting with now. And I definitely don’t know the guy who just walked over to her, pulling out a chair beside her.

“Are you okay?” Alex nudges me with his shoulder. “You look like you’re trying to give yourself TMJ.”

The guy sits down beside Lucy and smiles at her. He’s in a nice button-up and dark jeans, and his arm is on the back of her chair. I blink and reach for my drink.

“I should go say hi,” I say.

“Should you? You’ve got an angry look on your face and I am not in the mood to back you up in a fight. I just got off my shift this morning and I’m exhausted.”

I roll my eyes at Alex. “I’m not going to get into a fight, I’m going to say hello to a friend.”

“You know that girl?”

“Yep. That’s Lucy.”

“Graveyard Lucy? Dead dad Lucy?” Alex asks, eyebrows raised.

“Yes, that Lucy.”

Alex looks over at Lucy’s table and takes in the group of friends and the rich guy with his arm around Lucy’s chair who’s leaning in to whisper something in her ear.

“Oh, yeah. Go say hey.” Alex nods. “That’s going to end well.”

I roll my eyes again and take another swig of my drink before walking over to her table. I don’t even know what I’m doing, but my chest feels tight, and I think I might be jealous, but I can’t figure out why. I blink and I’m standing at their table, and she’s looking up at me with a mixture of happiness and confusion in those perfect green eyes.

“Hey.” I smile and slide my hands in the pockets of my jeans.

“Hey.” She grins up at me.

God, that smile. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her smile like that before. Her cheeks are flushed, and her hair is pulled up in a messy bun. I realized for the first time since I met her that she has exactly six freckles splayed across her cheeks and two on the bridge of her nose.

“I don’t mean to interrupt or anything, but I saw you sitting here and just thought I would come say hello.”

“Well, you did. Say hello, I mean.” The guy says, lips pursed. “Now you can go.”

I slowly look away from Lucy to the guy sitting beside her. His hand is gripping the back of her chair and his jaw is clenched, his eyebrow raised. I am not a jealous guy. I am also not the kind of guy who fights for a girl’s attention. I may not be the hottest guy in the room, but I know my own worth. And I know, without a doubt, that this guy isnotLucy’s type. I also know that she’s looking at him with distaste, and that from the second I walked up to the table, her eyes have done that adorable smiling thing they do whenever she sees me. Maybe it’s all those things piled together, or maybe it’s the beer I drank two seconds before walking up here, but either way, I look at this guy and smirk.

“Noah,” Lucy hisses, “don’t be rude.”

Noah opens his mouth to say something, but I shrug. “It’s okay. You’re here with friends, and like I said, I’m not here to interrupt anything. It was good to see you, Lucy.”

I smile at her again before walking back to my seat at the bar. Alex shakes his head and pushes a bottle of Corona toward me.

“Dude.” He grins.

“What?”
