“Yep. I’m a fast learner.”

“I see that. How ‘bout whoever makes it to the entry point wins?”

“What does the winner get?” I ask, raising my eyebrows.

I see him swallow and lick his lips, and I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.

“Whoever wins picks desert,” he says quickly.

“Desert?”

“Yeah, the final way to celebrate your new job—desert.”

I shake my head and laugh. “Okay, deal.”

“On the count of three?”

I nod and Wyatt bends his knees a little to get into position, I just roll my eyes.

“One.” He counts. “Two. Three.”

And for the next few seconds I’m not thinking about anything except beating Wyatt to the gate. Unsurprisingly, I lost. Wyatt smirks over at me as he leans against the gate and I sigh, resting my hands on my hips.

“Looks like I’m picking desert,” he teases.

“Best two out of three?”

“Sure, Sunshine. But we both know who’s going to win.”

My heart squeezes and my skin flushes at the way the nickname “Sunshine” sounds on his lips. I lift my chin up and cross my arms over my chest.

“Don’t underestimate me, Hayes. I can be scrappy when I need to be.”

“Oh, I’m sure you can,Carter.” He smirks. He detaches himself from the gate and skates a slow circle around me, making me feel a little dizzy. “And I would never underestimate you, I’m just very confident in my own abilities.”

I roll my eyes, even as my heart rate speeds up to a pace that can’t be healthy.

“My, aren’t we humble.” I huff.

Wyatt laughs and comes to a stop in front of me. He’s close enough that the toes of his skates touch mine, his caramel eyes darkening to a more chocolate brown. I lift my chin a little bit and raise my eyebrows.

“Like I said, I’m confident.” He skates past me, spinning dramatically so he can skate backward.

I laugh and slowly follow him, muttering, “Show off.”

He winks at me and skids to a stop so I can catch up to him. Once I do, he slows down, so we skate side by side. There’s no one else on the rink, and it’s getting kind of late, so we head back to the gate to take our skates off.

“Hey, can I ask you something?” Wyatt asks as we sit on the bench.

I take off my skates and slide my feet back into my sandals.

“You can ask, but I reserve the right to answer or not.”

He snorts a laugh. “That’s fair, I guess. Are you dating that guy you were with tonight? The one sitting beside you?”

He doesn’t look at me as he asks, instead focusing on untying his skates. I bite my lip to hold back my smile as I shake my head slowly.

“Why? You jealous?” I wonder.
