His jaw ticks and he sits up, running a hand through his hair. I bump my knee against his, and he glances over at me, his face unreadable.

“Relax, I’m teasing you. No, I’m not dating him.”

“Oh.” Wyatt nods, his shoulders relaxing a little. “Good to know.”

Chapter Six

Wyatt

Herfavoritecolorisblue, like the ocean. Her favorite song changes based on her mood, but right now she thinks it’s “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift—the ten-minute version. She can’t decide on a favorite book because she says too many have made an impact on her life and there’s too many she couldn’t live without. Her favorite place to visit is the beach. Her favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate, or s’mores, if that’s an option.

These are all important things I’ve learned about her in the past twenty minutes we’ve spent eating ice cream in the bed of my truck. I know it’s late and I have to work tomorrow, which means I have to get up fairly early in the morning, but I would be content to sit here with her for as long as she’ll let me.

“Okay.” She turns to me and tucks one leg up under her and I smile.

“Okay,” I say.

“What’s your favorite color?”

I think about it, because I’ve never really thought about picking a favorite color. I know what colors I like to wear, and I know what colors look good on me, but I never really thought about my favorite color.

“Wait!” she says excitedly. “Can I guess it?”

I shrug and take a bite of my waffle cone. “Sure.”

She leans back a little, examining me. She tilts her head to the side and narrows her eyes. She looks at my face, then at my shirt, then at my jeans and boots. She glances back at my truck, then taps her finger against her chin. I laugh and shake my head, licking my ice cream.

“You’re thinking way too much about this, Luce.”

“Green!” she bursts out excitedly.

“Green?”

“Yeah, green. But like, not just any green. The green the grass is after it rains, and the green of trees in the spring.”

Green,I think, like the color of her eyes.

In truth, she could have said any color and I would have agreed, simply because of how excited she got over it. But green . . . yeah, that’s probably my favorite.

“You guessed it, how’d you do that?”

She shrugs and finishes her ice cream, pulling the sleeves of my sweatshirt over her hands again. She refused to take it off, even after we left the ice rink and stepped out into the sweltering July heat. I didn’t mind though, that sweatshirt belonged to her from the second she pulled it over her shoulders.

“You just seem like a green person, I can’t really explain it. Anyway, it’s getting late, would you mind taking me home? I rode with Allie to the restaurant.”

“Yeah, sure.” I finish my ice cream and rub my hands on my jeans before hopping down and walking to the passenger side.

She looks confused as she follows me. “What are you doing?”

“Opening the door for you, why?”

She smiles up at me and shakes her head, stepping up into my truck.

“You’re a real gentleman, Wyatt Hayes.”

“Well, yeah, I am. Mama didn’t raise no heathen.” I wink at her before walking around to the driver’s side.

I get in and start the truck as she leans forward to start fiddling with my radio.
