I roll my eyes at her and she stretches, yawning again. I get out of the truck and carry her basket of apples and candy bag for her while she digs her keys out of her purse.

“Thank you,” she says after she unlocks it.

“For what?” I ask.

“For the best day.”

I lean forward and press my lips to hers. I can still taste the cinnamon from earlier, and I smile against her lips, making her laugh.

“Good night, Lucy,” I whisper.

“Good night, Wyatt.”

I drive home in a daze. Honestly, I’m so tired I barely make it into my apartment. I brush my teeth and toss my clothes in a hamper, yawning. My phone buzzes from my nightstand just as I collapse into bed.

Alex:I just saw your truck outside. Date went well, then?

Wyatt:You know, sometimes I hate living in the same complex as you. Quit stalking me.

Alex:Just saying, it’s pretty late.

Alex:And I’m not stalking. Stalking would be watching to see if you walked into your apartment alone or not.

Alex:Which I’m assuming you did, considering you're texting me.

Alex:Did you fall asleep?

Wyatt:Geez, man, I’m trying to sleep. Leave me alone.

Alex:Fine.

Alex:It’s good to see you like this, though.

Wyatt:Like what?

Alex:Happy. In love. All the mushy crap. It looks good on you.

Wyatt:Go to bed, weirdo. You’re getting sentimental and it’s freaking me out.

Wyatt:It’s good to be happy, though. And the whole love thing isn’t half bad either.

Chapter Forty-One

Lucy

December

Iwakeupandfor one perfect, blissful second everything feels perfect. And then the weight of the week hits me and I pull the covers over my head.

Wednesday, December 6th, will mark one year since my father’s death. Today is Monday, meaning I have two days to mentally prepare. I roll over and look at the picture of my dad and me on my nightstand. I feel the unshed tears start to sting the back of my eyes so I roll onto my back instead.

I’m going to the beach house tonight. I didn’t want to leave Mom alone, but she insisted. So, unless I can convince Wyatt to come with me today, I’ll be going alone. I take a deep breath and press his name on my phone.

“Good morning, sunshine.” His voice is quiet and instantly calms me down.

“Good morning,” I smile.

“Everything okay?”
