Reed: Yeah I know. Hey I’ll text you back. Jaxon’s calling me. Gotta go.

There’s complete radio silence for the next ten minutes, and I’m slowly going out of my mind while I wait to hear back from Reed. I pour my tea down the kitchen sink, watching it swirl down the drain. I’m no longer in the mood for tea.

Then I go and check on Bailey, who is thankfully fast asleep in his bed, his feet and knobby knees sticking out from beneath the covers.

My phone beeps again, and I snatch it up in my hand to read the text message as I hurry back down the stairs again.

Reed: Jaxon found him. He’s at Leon’s.

Me: Who’s Leon?

Reed: It’s a bar. Downtown. Jaxon said he’s a fucking mess. I’m going to go get him.

No!Dread creeps through my veins like a slithering snake, and I burst into tears, wiping my cheeks with trembling hands. No. No. No.What have you done, Kael?I swallow thickly as I send back a quick reply.

Me: I’ll go.

Reed: You haven’t seen him drunk, Sienna. He can be hard to handle. I’ve done this a thousand times before.

Me: I’m a professional, Reed. I know what I’m doing. He’s my responsibility.

Reed: Fine. But be careful, alright? And call me if you can’t handle things.

Me: Will do.

Reed: Ask for Cassie when you get there. She’s cool. I’ll send you the drop pin to Leon’s now.

Me: Thanks.

Grabbing my coat from the hook just inside the front door, I scribble out a note to leave on the hall table just in case Bailey wakes up and can’t find me.

Then I send Andrea a quick text message, asking her if she would mind coming over and staying with Bailey until I get home. I promise her I won’t be long. She responds within seconds.

Andrea: I’ll be there in five.

I’m out the door, locking it behind me, and then I’m in the car, pulling away from the curb.

I don’t know what I’m about to walk into, what kind of destruction he’s left in his wake, and my brain is racing a million miles an hour as I drive through the darkened streets, but this time, I know what I need to do.

This has gone on long enough. I’ll do whatever it takes to make things right with Kael.

He’s going to talk to me whether he likes it or not.

Sienna

Leon’s is a dive bar in downtown SoHo. It’s a dingy-looking place that I’ve never been to before, and as I walk through the front doors, I can see why.

A thick layer of smoke lies heavily across the narrow room, and the whole place reeks of stale beer and tobacco.

Scanning the bar, I don’t immediately find Kael, and I panic slightly that I might be too late. Perhaps he’s already left. I don’t see Jaxon anywhere either for that matter. Maybe they’ve both already gone?

To where, though? Another bar?

All I can see are a group of rowdy bikers downing shots by the front window, and there are a few guys in business suits drinking beer at small round tables in the middle of the room.

A couple of scantily-clad women are sitting in leather booths, sipping white wine, and the men keep looking over at them with stupid-ass grins on their faces.

“Can I get you something to drink?” The waitress who approaches me as I wander farther inside is carrying an empty tray in her hands, holding it in front of her stomach. “It’s two-for-one beers. Or the house wine is a chardonnay. Cocktails are ten bucks a pop, shots are sold by the tray.”
