Page 50 of Echoes of Him

“What if he tries something with you?”

“Maybe I want him to try something with me.”

He swallows, hard. “Do you?”

No. Of course not. That’s what I want to say. But I’m not going to tell him that. For OperationGet Over KaelJenkinsto work properly I need to put myself out there again, and I can’t have all this shit between us standing in my way.

“We shouldn’t be talking about this, Kael.” I step out into the hallway, his hand falling from my chin.

“Like hell, we shouldn’t.”

“It’s none of your business what Ashton and I do. It’s none of your business what I do with anyone, for that matter.”

“Ashton?” He makes a face like he’s just sucked on a rotten lemon. Icy eyes cast over me doubtfully. “That’s his name? Ashton?”

“Yes.”

“That’s a shit name. I don’t like it.”

“I see.”

“Do you like it?”

Exasperated would be an understatement right now. “Do I like the name Ashton? I don’t know. It’s alright, I suppose.”

“Nah, I don’t like it at all. It’s weird.”

“Says the man named after a leafy green vegetable that’s spelled all kinds of wrong.”

He glares at me, and I glare right back at him.

“You think you’re clever, don’t you?” His glare slips a notch, and then he studies my lips for entirely too long. And just like that, my body lights up to the point I’m suddenly a sweaty, disheveled mess.

Plain ridiculous.

I need to get out of here, away from him. The farther the better, in fact.

“Goodbye, Kael.”

Now I’m power walking down the corridor toward the staff room, and Kael is traipsing along behind me like a little lost puppy.

“Where’s he taking you?” he asks.

Keep walking, Sienna. Just keep walking. Don’t answer him. Don’t let him ruin this for you. Ashton could be the love of your life. Highly doubtful, but still. Tonight is all about you, and you don’t need to explain yourself to anyone, least of all a spoiled rock star who knows exactly how to push your buttons.

“Just tell me where he’s taking you. I know most of the local places. The decent places. I can tell you what’s good to order.”

“Kael, stop—”

“If you’re really set on going out with this guy, then he should take you someplace fancy,” he muses, and his voice drops to a contemplative tone as if he’s giving it real thought. “Someplace nice, you know?”

Thankfully the staffroom door comes into view up ahead, and I practically lunge for the door handle. “And why is that?”

“Because it’syou.”

Damn.My heart somersaults in my chest.

I can’t take much more of this before I turn into a puddle of mush right here in the hallway. Pretty sure Dr. Copeland wouldn’t approve of me ruining the new carpet. But then again, I’m pretty certain Dr. Copeland wouldn’t approve of a whole lot of things lately.
