“And if they happened to have a temporary badge, they could stop any investigation,” Kaden added. “I’m sure the freezer floor was slick. Who’s going to question the sheriff?”

Lia made a sound of annoyance. It was a good theory. A damned shame it was just that. A theory.

“The problem now is how we prove any of this.” She shook her head in disgust, her finger touching the nearest picture. “Whoever attacked Ryan now has the evidence. They’ve probably already destroyed it.”

“True.”

Kaden’s tone was distracted, as if he had his mind on something else. She turned, belatedly realizing he had leaned forward, close enough for his warm breath to brush her cheek.

“Kaden.”

The silver eyes darkened to smoke as they watched the blush stain her cheeks. “Yes?”

The room suddenly felt too hot. As if someone had cranked up the furnace. Not surprising. Kaden was big and gorgeous and indecently sexy. He would give any woman hot flashes.

“We’re trying to figure out how to prove Ryan Burke was murdered.”

“I know. But . . .”

“But?”

He swept his fingers through the short strands of her hair. “I keep getting distracted.”

Her heart thundered so fast she could barely breathe. “Don’t blame me.”

“I do.” His hand cupped the back of her head. “This is entirely your fault.”

“What is?”

“This.”

He tugged her close, sealing their lips together in a kiss that sent shock waves of pleasure to the tips of her toes. Desire blasted through her, melting away any hesitation as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She could taste coffee on his lips and something else. Something that was pure Kaden.

Magic.

Butterflies fluttered in her stomach, tiny sparks of pleasure racing through her. She tightened her arms around his neck, suddenly wishing she could freeze this moment. This was exactly where she wanted to spend the rest of eternity.

The thought had barely managed to form when it was shattered as the revving of a loud engine broke the sensual spell. It was distant enough she could easily have ignored the annoying sound. And any other day she would have. She wanted to drown in the glorious sensations that spilled through her. It’d been so long since a man had stirred her hunger to a fever pitch. She wanted to climb in his lap and forget the world outside.

But today the noise of the engine was a sharp reminder that she’d heard that sound before.

“Wait.” She pulled back, trying to think through the passion that clouded her mind.

Kaden frowned, concern darkening his eyes. “What’s wrong?”

With a strangled sound, she was leaping to her feet and running toward the door. “That’s the engine I heard after my window was busted.”

“Careful, Lia,” he called out as she wrenched open the door and took the steps three at a time. “Damn.”

With a burst of speed, Kaden had caught up to her as she entered the store and dashed toward the large front window. Lia pressed her face against the cold glass, her gaze sweeping the street for a glimpse of a vehicle before it could disappear. Thankfully, the driver was headed south and had been forced to stop at the corner. It gave Lia the opportunity to get the full view of the truck before it drove through the intersection and disappeared.

She sent Kaden a startled glance. “Cord Walsh.”

“You’re sure?”

“Absolutely. His grandfather painted a cow on the back tailgate when he used the truck to deliver milk around town. It’s faded, but you can still see that outline. As far as I know, it’s the only one in town that looks like that.”

Kaden muttered a curse. “I’ve been intending to have a word with that young man. Looks like it needs to be sooner rather than later.”
