Whoever it was had to be a monster.

“We need to have them tested,” she told Kaden.

“We will.”

Lia squeezed Kaden’s fingers, needing him to understand how important this was to her.

“Kaden, you can’t wait. Whoever poisoned them might try to come back to get rid of them.”

“Don’t worry.” He leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead. As if they’d somehow reached the stage in their relationship where they casually exchanged caresses. Lia didn’t mind. Right now, it was more comforting than anything. “I’ll go back to get them as soon as you’re transferred.”

Lia frowned, wondering if she’d misheard what he’d said. Her brain was still a little fuzzy.

“What are you talking about?”

He straightened, gazing down at her with an expression that was suddenly hard, as if he was anticipating an argument.

“I’m having you moved to a hospital in Madison.”

Lia’s heart missed a beat. “Why? Is something wrong?”

“No, it’s just for observation,” he hastily assured her. “You should be released tomorrow.”

“Then why can’t I stay here?”

“It’s not safe.”

Lia glanced around the room. She appreciated that Kaden was worried about her, but one hospital room was pretty much like another.

“It’s as safe as anywhere.”

Kaden gave a firm shake of his head. “Between you and Anthony and Drew, the waiting room is overflowing with worried citizens from Pike. I don’t trust any of them.” His lips twisted in disgust. “Not to mention that the security consists of one old guard who doesn’t even have a weapon. Anyone could wander in here.”

Lia shivered. Okay, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to spend a few hours away from Pike and the monster who was creeping through her store at night. At least she wouldn’t be so weak when she returned.

She heaved a sigh. “I’m too tired to argue.”

“And you know I’m right.”

She rolled her eyes. “Are you driving me to Madison?”

Kaden hesitated, as if considering his words. “No. I arranged for an air ambulance.”

She waited for him to smile. That had to be a joke, right? When he simply gazed down at her with a defiant expression on his face, Lia made a sound of disbelief.

“Okay, now you’re just being silly. I don’t need a helicopter.”

“It’s the safest and fastest way to get you there,” he stubbornly insisted.

“Kaden—”

“Indulge me,” he interrupted, leaning down to steal her protest with a soft, pleading kiss.

Lia conceded defeat. She really was too tired to argue. “What about you?”

“I hired the services of a private security firm in Madison. They promised they’ll have a uniformed officer waiting at the hospital. Only the staff will be allowed in or out of your room,” he told her.

Lia couldn’t imagine how much money it was costing Kaden to not only arrange an air ambulance for her trip to Madison but to have a security guard at her room. That was a worry for another day.
