He pressed his hands over his chest. “Ouch, babe.”

I scrubbed my hands over my face. “Look, Tor, I really need to get some work done.”

“Your boss said—”

“I know what he said.” I took a second to breathe, pushing back the self-induced panic and lowering the shrill tone. “But there’s an important merger I’m trying to draft a contract for. It has a long lead time, but I want to get it done and turned in before the trip. That way, I can enjoy my Caribbean vacation before the real work begins.”

“Okay. When’s the draft due?”

I pursed my lips. “Three days after I get back.”

“And let me guess—you’ve already got it nearly done, so now you’re trying to impress them with your work ethic because your family will hear all about it from Mr. Avery, who’s also a guest at the wedding?”

Ihatedthat I was so transparent to this man.Yep, that’s me! Little Miss Ambition.“Yes. That’s why I told you I would meet you for dinner at eight.” Only after he’d badgered me through text messages, but that didn’t need saying.

Viktor narrowed his eyes. I expected him to argue and needle me further, so I was shocked as hell when he said, “Alright, suits.”

I blinked. “That’s it?”

“Yeah—you work. Give me a key to your place, but at eight sharp, you’re all mine.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “Why do you need a key?”

A mischievous twinkle danced through his eyes. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”

I could see he wasn’t leaving me alone, not until he had the key. And really...what could he do with it? The little voice in the back of my mind surmised it was highly probable that if he wanted to get in, the lack of a key wouldn’t stop him. I shook my head. Just because he looked like a criminal didn’t mean he was one. It would be rude of me to judge him by his appearance.

I threw up my hands. “Fine!” Snatching my purse, I grabbed the key. “Here. Happy?”

Viktor snorted. “Hardly.”

Our hands touched, and electricity sizzled over my skin.

“Eight sharp, or I’m coming in here and hauling you to dinner—like the neanderthal I am.” While he might have used a teasing tone, the promise was clear.

“You can’t just boss me around, Tor!” I snapped, pushing the door closed.

His cocky smile begged to differ.
