“I do. Many of the senior partners take apprentices to groom.”

“Not first years.”

“Then it’s a good thing I’m a workaholic who’s busted her ass and put in double the billable hours any other has.”

“Hmm...a good thing indeed.”

The door burst open. I squeaked, turning around. Viktor thundered into the room, his face riven with anger. “Your video feed cut out the moment you came in here,” he snarled.

Mr. Avery arched a brow and returned to leaning back in his chair. “You think this is my first rodeo with the Bratva? I gambled she was bugged, so I switched on a device to block it.”

“And it only took you this long to break in?” I demanded, shooting to my feet.

Viktor, breathing hard and looking between us, narrowed his gaze. “I stayed back when he came back with a shirt on, but it’s been long enough.”

“Well, you have nothing to worry about,” I snapped. “We’re professionals, and he’s just agreed to all my terms andmore. So, apologize and make nice to the man who is going to ensure the contract dissolves without us having to go to war with Volkov or revealing the knowledge of his spy.”

Viktor blinked. He stepped forward and clamped a possessive hand on my shoulder. “I’ll never apologize to others how I act over you, suits.”

“Well said,” Mr. Avery quipped. He stood and extended a hand to Viktor. “Let’s get you out of that contract, your highness.”

Oh saints! This was the picture of the rest of my life—my growly ussuri playing with other blackguard players, where I would either battle with him or submit to his demands in deference. Only one thing was certain—I would reign on the throne beside him.

Chapter 39 – Viktor

“I’m coming with you! I’m part of this, Tor. I’ll live or die at your side.”Briana’s words played over in my mind as we drove through the streets, her hand resting on my thigh.

Briana’s lawyer came through, and now we were off to sign the contract’s dissolution. Volkov hadn’t taken the news well. It had taken a lot of heated discussion—and a huge douse of luck. There’d been several occasions where I believed none of us would make it out of the interview alive. The balm that tampered the heat of the debate was when Uncle Igor had suggested to Volkov that the Metak Gang was looking for a marriage agreement to broker peace between them. He’d taken the news with interest and resigned himself to the dissolution of ours.

Why we couldn’t simply say it was done and why I had to leave my castle to witness the signing, I still didn’t understand. In the end, I’d listened to Briana. She’d said this was the way contracts were ended, and as my lawyer, I trusted her.

Stepping out of my Italian Bull, I walked next to the enchantress as we entered Volkov’s hotel. I couldn’t wait for this all to be over....and then Briana and I were due for alongvacation.

“Do we have to stay for dinner?” Briana muttered.

“Why? Do you have somewhere else to be?” I tucked my arm around her back, relaxing when she leaned into me.
