The elevator door dinged. Time seemed to still as I cut a look.

“You bitch! You ruined everything!” Anya cried as she came rushing out—with a gun in her hand.

My body reacted, even as my mind realized I wouldn’t make it to Bri in time.

The shot went off.

There were shouts and a scuffle. But it was a faded roar as I made it to where my love had fallen to the ground—pinned under the East Coast lawyer.

I pushed Avery off, but Briana snapped up at me, “He’s bleeding!”

The lawyer paled, grinding his teeth and clutching his shoulder. “Are you alright, Briana?”

“Yes!” she gasped, pawing at his suit. “All thanks to you.”

I held her tight in my arms a second later and was whipping my head back and forth, looking toward the shooter.

The kingpin of the Serbs had his bride in a compromising hold. His strong legs held hers, arm wrapped tight around her arms and torso, while his other hand reached up to choke her throat.

“Ah, my pretty bride, you’re a wild one. But don’t worry, that turns me on. I’ll enjoy taming you,” he growled into her ear.

I met Anya’s eyes.I’m not saving you.The Metak Gang could have her. But from the way Jakov didn’t actually apply pressure, and the way he shielded her body from my men, I knew instinctively that she would be fine. My mind boiled in anger. I would consider my guilt later, but right now, I hated her.

“Take me home, Tor,” Briana murmured. “I’ve had enough for one day.”

Nikolai and two of Volkov’s men were helping Avery to his feet, and Igor and Volkov were already working over the hotel management. There was nothing left for me to do.

It had all happened so fast. It was a bitter reminder of why I’d kept Briana away from the underworld. But this was her life now—her life with me.

I placed a kiss against her hair. “This was why—” I started to say, but her fingers found my lips, stopping me.

“Don’t. I could just as easily get into a car crash back in Manhattan and die never being yours. I knew what I was signing up for when I came after you. I want this life with you, my big, growly ussuri. Now—take me home.”

She was mine.I will spend every minute of every day making sure you’re safe, I vowed fiercely.
