I spun back to stare at him. But he wasn’t looking at me; he was too busy walking down the drive.
“Viktor?” I called.
“Suits,” he responded, without looking around.
“Where are you going?” I called.
“To the waterfall!”
I gaped in disbelief. He wasn’t thinking of— “Are you walking there?”
“Yep!”
I jogged after him, thinking he looked like a mercenary all dressed in black. “We can’t go into town. It’s not safe to leave the resort.”
“That’s what the pamphlets say to mitigate lawsuits.”
“Viktor!” I protested, finally catching up to him.
He stopped, and those strong arms wrapped around me when I pitched forward. “Briana,” he said, voice deep and steady. “We’ve known each other a long time. And in all that time, have I done anything earth-shatteringly terrible where you were put in harm’s way?”
I paused to consider. There were plenty of capers and good times spent with this man and his sister. Sophia was the reckless, wild, will-o-the-wisp that we were always trying to reign in, but otherwise... “No.”
Viktor inclined his head. “We’re safe—you’re safe. I’m not letting anything happen to you. Okay?”
“Okay,” I breathed.
“Now, we’ve got a waterfall to see.” And with that, he turned and began walking again.
And come hell or high water, I would follow where he led.
Chapter 10 – Viktor
Coffee and breakfasthad been the perfect offering to coax Briana out of bed at that unholy hour. And my caresses had successfully diverted her attention from the deeper questions. I couldn’t have her asking how I got into the room, because while stealing a master key was easy, coming up with a cover story wasn’t, and the reasons for walking through town were a touch harder to work around.
Being a street rat, I had a constant finger on the pulse of LA’s true structure and government, and while on this trip, I’d employed the same response. I’d done my research back in LA, using my devilishly clever sister’s help to ensure last night’s encounter was planned and accounted for.
