“I forgive you, suits.”

She swallowed. “I will work on tempering my anger toward you, Tor. Just because we can’t have what we want doesn’t mean we have to make this prison any worse than it already is by being at each other’s throats.”

A madness seized me. Pushing a lock of hair behind her ear, I whispered, “If you need to be angry, suits, take it out on me. I can handle it.”

The smile that spread over her lips was sad. “I know you can, ussuri.”

Turning on her heel, she left, pausing only to drop the bloodied cloth back on the bench.

As the door closed, I fisted my hand and punched the mirror. Glass shattered and rained over the sink and floor, surrounding my bare feet. It didn’t matter; hell was my reality.

This nightmare will never end.

Chapter 25 – Viktor

Ichecked my watchagain. The bright emerald sports car idled against my back. While there wasn’t technically a back seat, Sophia insisted that we would fit, and it was the only vehicle we owned that was suitable to meet our New York guests—the people ruining my life.

It didn’t matter how many times I told myself this arrangement was for the best, I still couldn’t make myself believe the too young Miss Volkov would be a good life partner. I’d known as the blood relative to the pakhan that I wouldn’t be allowed to marry lightly, and while I fought to protect Sophia from the fate of being chattel, I resigned myself to it.

Or I had. Until the trip to paradise.

“Briana came here ready to fight for you!”Sophia yelled at me late last night.“Can’t you at least meet her halfway?”

Everything had changed with that underground cage match. Briana retreated mentally and emotionally. The sadness had won, the anger previously driving her sapping away. My sister hadn’t stopped hissing about her friend’s heartache. I didn’t understand why I got Sophia’s venom when my heart was equally broken. As if knowing I was thinking about her, Sophia barreled out the front door. She was beautiful with her snowy hair piled high at the back of her head, little whisps framing her face. But it was the vision in black following her that made it hard to breathe. The midnight satin clung to the long curves of her body, while her nut-brown hair curled in loose waves around her shoulders.

“I’m smaller. I’ll go in the back,” Sophia chirped, scrambling to climb into the vehicle.

Briana and I stared at each other across the roof of the car. Her eyes were more blue than usual, bright and framed in smokey hues. I didn’t know what she read on my face, but all I could think was that I would ravish her if I was free man. We wouldn’t be going out; I would throw her over my shoulder, then caveman carry her to my room where I would then proceed to make her scream with pleasure.

Maybe being the villain would be worth it.I’m a mobster. I don’t have to be the hero. That insidious thought held a lot of weight right now, and I could live with the fact that I had a technical fiancée if Briana was willing to play along and make the most of it. But she wouldn’t, and I wouldn’t force her. I might be a monster, but I wasn’t evil.

Letting out a long breath, Briana broke the spell. “Let’s go to dinner. I have a brief I want to get back to.”

So saying, she folded into the passenger seat. I slid behind the wheel and let the Italian Bull bellow as it sped through the gate. Even though there would be a security detail at the venue, a black SUV of soldiers pulled out behind us. I was damned sure there would be no surprises on the highway tonight.

“You look beautiful—both of you.” I flicked a glance back at my sister, who was cramped in the backseat. The shit-eating grin on her face shifted something inside me.What are you up to, zaika?
