“You think they’d expect us to make one more pass?” I flicked a glance into the mirrors. No one was following us.

“Ooh! I like where you’re going with this!” Sophia cheered. “Let’s hit ‘em hard!”

“You really sound like a ‘40s gangster, Soph.”

My friend grinned at me, and I flashed her a fast smile.

“Come in sharp and break hard. I can hit their vans and cripple them,” Sophia instructed.

I did.

The return fire came quicker this time. But Sophia’s advice had me whipping the car. Her bullets sprayed in a wider arc, and from her loud whoop, she’d hit the targets.

“Zaika!” Viktor roared from the upper windows. “Get the fuck home! Now!”

I looked up and saw Russians gathered on the roof above. They were providing cover for those who burst like a storm from the front doors. It would be a bloodbath.

“We got them good. Let’s go; the boys can clean up the rest.” Sophia pulled herself back through the window.

I raced down the road. About a mile later, sirens wailed, heading in the direction we’d just come from. Unease flickered through me.

“The guys would have cleared out by now,” Sophia assured me.

“So...what was that all about?” I asked, body still numb from the adrenaline pounding through my veins.

“One of our shipments got hit. The Serbs swore they didn’t steal it, but we found the goods in one of their warehouses. The intelligence Viktor got claimed they were just as surprised by the appearance of our stolen goods as we were. It’s been a series of attacks back and forth since. They hit a second shipment the night you flew in, but...” Sophia paused, turning to face me. “This part you can’t tell another soul.”

When I nodded, she squeezed my arm. “I mean it, Bri.”

“Ouch!” I yelped.

“Sorry, but this is serious,” Sophia muttered. She blew out a breath before stating baldly, “Viktor thinks we have a snitch. The hits were precise. There were only a handful of brigadiers—they’re captains of Bratva teams—who knew of the change in route for the caravan. Somehow that information got fed to the Metak Gang, because they knew right where to hit us.”

“So, there was a bloodbath between you and the Metak Gang the other night, and now they’re retaliating?” I shuddered. This was...ugly.

She nodded. “They know too much. And what we don’t understand is that there’s no benefit in attacking us. We can talk with my brother, but I think this confirms that we’re up against a puppet master.”

“Wow,” I gulped.

“Yeah, welcome to my hell,” she sighed.

“You know what? We need ice cream,” I decided. Turning sharp, I followed a glowing neon sign. “We’ll be quick, I promise.”

We were.
