I flattened my palms on my thighs and turned to face him. “I didn’t purposely leave that piece of information out. That night was long and full of turbulence. The middle-aged man with bad breath who drove me around wasn’t on my mind.”

While I spoke, a muscle feathered in his jaw. Was he remembering the promises our bodies spoke? It seemed equally as hard for him to forget the bonds we’d forged in peace. It was my only hope to salvage this. Constantine was an incensed god from mythology, a raging mass of terrible power. He required a sacrifice. I would give that to him, make him seemeonce again—his bride.

“Were there other servants?” Constantine ground out.

I nodded. “Yes. But they came and went at regular intervals. I wasn’t to speak to them. They signed NDAs. They rarely lasted over a month at a time.”

“What cities did you live in?”

“What cities didn’t I?” I snorted. “Look, I was kept in the dark. So much so that I was only allowed to travel at night. Sure, I knew the bigger towns, but even then, the neighborhoods or streets escape me.”

“Well, there has to be something,” Constantine bit out, pulling onto the lonely highway.

“I wish there was,” I said softly, hating the cruelty in his voice. Except it wasn’t the pain and anger—those emotions I could deal with—it was that I was the object of his wrath. I was caught somewhere on the wrong side of this, stranded in no man’s land, and yet he knew deep in his heart that I wasn’t.I will find a way back to you.

Was it insanity to want the man next to me who was speeding into the oncoming night? Probably. But the darkness in me craved the monster in him. In a world of brutes and villains, who could settle for prince charming when there was a kingpin of the underworld tempting me deeper into the shadows?

I wanted to change the subject and talk about us, about the damage that fate was raining down on us. Instead, I asked, “Where are we going?”

“To Viktor’s estate. You’re going to speak with Sophia and help us find a thread to pull on. He won’t let his sister out of his sight while interacting with us, but he’ll help.”

The finality of his tone had a pit sinking in my stomach.I’m not giving up!This mess wasn’t over, but since I wasn’t dead and could still fight, that was exactly what I was going to do.

Chapter 55 – Constantine

Something dark andvolatile buzzed through the room, undercutting the whir of the computer fans. The current of energy aligned with the soft fall of Talia’s steps. Adrian’s shifting glance told me when she crossed the threshold of Sophia’s office. I couldn’t stand to look at her. I fixed my gaze out the window at the lamp-lit garden. The hate-fucking in the blood house didn’t make it any easier to be with her. If anything, my feelings were now super convoluted and twisted. My wrath wasn’t sated, and my agony festered. Everyone could no doubt feel the potent mixture boiling between us.

The trouble was...Talia understood. This brave, beautiful woman didn’t cower in the face of my fury. She understood that when I looked at her, all I saw was what happened. She might not have been part of it, but she was a constant and painful reminder. And because she wanted my forgiveness, she was begging for the lash of my anger...something I was in danger of giving her again. The desire to fuck all my hate out with her scared me.

“Hi, everyone....” Her voice trailed off, clearly feeling out of place.

Viktor rose from his chair, having better manners than my cousin or me.

Turning to watch him from the corner of my eye, I caught the slow smile that spread over his lips. If I didn’t know he had a woman who was his world, I would shoot him. How dare he look at Talia like that! When he sent me a look, I realized I’d been staring at him. With the killing rage permanently tinting my vision, I must have painted a possessive picture—and the Russian bastard thought it was funny!

“Welcome to my home, Talia,” he said. “Did you find everything in the guest rooms to your satisfaction?”
