I felt sick and numb at the same time. Viktor motioned with two fingers for me to leave, but I kept a firm grip on Adrian. “Make your vow and then take me to the car,” I said to my cousin-in-law.

It wasn’t the time to play the strong independent woman; I was totally okay with leaning on a male. I was also aware the best thing I could do for Adrian right now was to get him out of here. “Please, let’s go, Adrian.”

With a nod, Adrian muttered a string of Greek under his breath. My brother had done this to Iryna, and I was glad I ended him. If Claude wasn’t already dead, I would have vowed to destroy him. But there was only one name left to bury six feet under, and I mentally promised Iryna’s corpse that I would accomplish that final task too.

“I’m done,” Adrian rasped, finally turning away.

Together, broken and leaning on one another, we hobbled from the room and out of the building. I didn't think the smell of bleach would ever leave my nostrils, and I knew that going forward, if I ever went into a chlorinated pool, the nausea and horror would come sweeping back over me as I remembered what had happened to Iryna.

Once outside in the open air, we waited until Viktor and his men came out, a body bag in tow. They set it in the trunk of the SUV.

Viktor came over to us. “We’re going to blow this place to the heavens.”

I tipped my head to the side, wondering what he meant.

“There are more bodies in those other barrels, aren’t there?” Adrian rasped.

Viktor nodded, his gaze turning to me. “Your brother was more than a sick fucker, he was a serial killer. There are charred remains of many missing people in there.”

My throat tightened. “I think I’m going to be sick.”

“Well, it’s going to have to wait till we get out of here. Cops will swarm this place, and then crime scene units will come after. Keep it down.”

I clenched my teeth and nodded. As we’d spoken, a brave soldier had gone to rewire the entrance. He came jogging back, giving a curt nod to Viktor. Going to the trunk, the boss removed a long rifle. He took aim, and I covered my ears just before his piercing report initiated the explosion that sent the building exploding high into the sky.

Over the blast and roar of flames, Viktor lowered the weapon and shouted, “Let’s go!”

With the morbid flames saluting our retreat, we piled back into the vehicles and took off, speeding through the deserted industrial park. It wasn’t until we turned down a main road that the blare of sirens rang through the air.

Chapter 61 – Constantine

Night set in beforeI was done at the docks unraveling the mess created with my shipping empire. Smuggled product had been brought to shore in smaller vessels, much like in the olden days. My men were weary, but the goods were safely hidden in a warehouse owned by an offshore corporation. US customs would never find it, because I was damn good at this game.

However, there was one more task to attend to before this incident could be filed away—namely, how we would deal with the custom’s official. Two options were obvious. Either deliver the lesson he needed to be taught in such a manner that he would bear the physical reminder for the rest of his life—or end him. The first option twisted my stomach, but it was a tried and true course in the underworld. The second left a mess that looked bad on paper, since he was investigating my company. Even though I could make his death look like an accident, it wouldn’t end the attack on my company, given the file was open.

Mercifully, there was a third option—a corrupt politician was in my back pocket for a debt. At a time like this, having drinks and small talk was the last thing I wanted to do, but no one else could solve this problem like a scheming Abe Larsen could. I ran a tight ship in terms of my smuggling operation. So, this meeting wasn’t a matter to pawn off to my number two, no matter how capable he was, and ending this scourge on my business was a matter of the utmost importance. Thus, a couple of old fashions and a bowl of peanuts at Club Black with dirty Abe was a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.
