Chapter 70 – Constantine

The Monsterdrifted sidelong into the stalled yacht. With a terrible crash, the plexi glass and the wood cracked on contact. But I was already jumping to grab the side of the yacht.

My fingers slipped on the slick edge. No.No!I groaned in desperation as I pulled myself up. With a mighty effort, I grabbed for the railing just as I lost my original grip. This wasn’t my usual style. Insanity had consumed me, making me charge into battle, guns ablaze. It didn’t matter. I had to get to Talia before it was too late. As soon as I found my footing, I clutched my weapon and moved forward.

“I’ll go up and take out the captain,” Daniel rasped as he struggled over the rail.

I gave him a curt nod. “Keep him alive in case we need to use him to find the devil,” I relayed in a hushed tone. It was time to find my wife. I would owe the faithful guard a great debt after this.

Each room I peered into as I moved along the deck was empty. This yacht might be compact, but it was a labyrinth inside, and I didn’t want to go below until I secured the perimeter.

As I prowled forward, a grizzled face stuck out of one of the interior cabins. “What the hell was that noise—?”

The devil stopped speaking as we locked eyes. There was a pause where we let shock reign as the situation became terribly clear. He was here. Which meant Talia... A cold sweat broke over my body. Whatever happened, this foul brute wasn’t leaving the ship alive.

As if coming to the same conclusion, the beady eyed fucker slid back into the room just as I fired at the space he’d been not a second ago! The door slammed, its finality jarring me. I yelled and dashed forward. The door was locked. There was a shout within.

Don’t you dare lay a hand on her, you bastard!I pointed my gun and fired at where the lock met the door. Chipped pieces of wood flew at me. Slamming my shoulder into the door, I barreled into the room.

I should have looked for cover. I should have done a thousand things differently when infiltrating this boat. Instead, Talia’s scream of warning rang in my ears.

I froze, staring at the mouth of a gun.

Sitting in a chair beside the devil was my bride. Her lip was split and hair all askew. They were five feet away. Close quarters for a shoot-out.

“Drop your gun,” Gustave barked.

“You first!” I yelled. My finger itched to squeeze the trigger. I could make the shot. The devil would die. Whatever happened to me—Talia would be free.

Gustav must have seen the resolve in my eyes. He knew I didn’t care if I died, so long as I killed him. With a malicious grin, Gustave opened his body as a wide target...by changing the angle of the gun. Horror writhed in my gut because he was now pointing it at Talia.

“No!” I seethed. My heart pulsed painfully in my chest, echoed by the noise of my gun clattering to the floor. There was no choice. I wouldn’t let him hurt her.

“So fucking weak,” Gustave sneered as he aimed at me.

“Constantine—” Talia choked out, tears streaming down her beautiful face.

I met her gaze and offered her a smile. “It’s going to be okay,” I lied.

“I love you,” she sobbed.

The devil pinched his eyes, rubbing them hard between the fingers of his free hand. “I really would have thought better of you, butcher. You’re more stupid than I expected.”

I took a step forward.

“Don’t!” Gustave brandished his gun. I bared my teeth, ready to charge.

Talia must have read it in my face because she yelped, “Constantine, no!”

“I’ve had just about enough of you,” Gustave snarled, reaching back to slam Talia’s head into the wall. She crumpled.
