“To whom do you belong?” I ground out, pressing her tightly against my body. My hold on her hair had her wincing.

“To you.”

“Then why are you here to fulfill the obligation to your father?”

Her eyes widened in shock. Her breathing increased, and, as an afterthought, I realized it was probably because of the incident with Jason. It wasn’t the right time to tell her I knew she was an assassin. And I sure as hell wasn’t going to tell her it took one to know one. Instead, I added, “When you come to my bed, it won’t be because your father sent you.”

“Really? How could it possibly be any other way?”

My own mind repeated the question. Was I really going to complicate this insane situation with sex? Except, I knew how resisting her sucked. Giving in might clear the air, put things in a different perspective. Maybe it was simple. Maybe I’d overcomplicated things.

“I want you. You want me.” I leaned down and pressed my lips to her cheek. “Take the fucking war paint off, Talia. See your father for the bastard he is.”

She let out an exasperated breath. “You’re impossible.”

I released her, gently pushing her out of the way. “I have to go to LA for a couple of days. Have a good long think while I’m gone.”

I brushed past her, already fighting the pull to let her go. The truth was, I was so desperate to reach the beautiful princess trapped beneath a weight of lies that I was in danger of taking her here and now. It would only lead to disaster because Talia wasn’t ready. She needed to fight her battles and claw her way from the wreckage all on her own. I couldn’t do that for her. White knights were a scourge on society. All I could do was offer her help and friendship, but only if she was willing to accept it. And the truth was, if I opened myself to her now, I would only hurt myself.

“Constantine?”

My name on her lips stopped me in my tracks. I looked over my shoulder, not meeting her gaze. “Yes?”

“Be safe.”

It almost sounded genuine. Maybe someday it could. “I will.”

Chapter 32 – Talia

“I’ll be in LA for afew more days,” Drakos said, his tone difficult to read through the phone.

I glanced out of the window at the fashionable middle-class apartment structure, keenly aware of what I had to do. Philip waited patiently in the driver’s seat, the partition closed, as I answered my husband’s call.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said,” I admitted, unsure if the driver had reported my whereabouts or if this call was random. There was nothing to hide either way.

Drakos’s heavy breathing came through the phone, and a comforting warmth spread over my body, chasing away some of the trepidation of my mission.
