The doctor continued to work, but everyone else stilled.

“I said, get the fuck out! He’s my husband, and this is my house.” I flung my free hand toward the door and glared at her across the room. “If you’re going to insult me or say I don’t belong here, I don’t want your negative energy in this room.”

I turned back to Constantine.

“My brother’s blood is on your hands.” Iryna voice was eerily quiet. “If he dies, you’ll regret ever being born.”

“Noted.” I refused to shiver at her tone.

As I continued to assist the doctor, I couldn’t help comprehending all the blood. A week ago, this would’ve been a victory. It would have been so easy to end this beautiful, noble man. Constantine would be dead, my hands coated with the blood of my family’s vendetta. But as I looked at his ashen face, I couldn’t find a trace of the enemy there anymore. You’re my family; my everything now.

I just prayed he’d live so I could tell him.

Chapter 39 – Constantine

Wednesday morning,I watched the digital numbers crawl slowly to an acceptable hour. After five full days in bed, I was done. At four on the dot, I threw back the covers and rolled out of bed. Adrian, who was snoozing in the armchair, jolted awake.

“Fuck, you scared me!” He slapped a hand on his chest.

“Sorry,” I grumbled, struggling not to limp as I moved past him. I stopped at the door of my bedroom. “She’s alive, right?”

“Yeah. I have to admit, it was a Herculean effort not to let Yna shred your bride. But they’re separated, and Talia’s safe.”

For now.“And you haven’t let her in here?”

Adrian flinched at the tone I used. “No, as much as that little vixen of yours protested, it was the only way to keep Yna from killing her.” Adrian flexed his fingers over his thighs as his eyes shifted to the side of the room.

I wanted to berate Adrian for the situation, but summoning the effort seemed too difficult. Hell, why did my head have to throb so badly? Gritting my teeth, I pushed through it and made my way to the closet. I pulled out a suit and undergarments, then looked at the drawer of ties. That could wait, the damn suit was heavy enough. Sweat beaded on my forehead, and a clammy sensation spread over my body as I labored into the bathroom and set to work cleaning myself up.

The sutures were well covered, so I risked a shower. With no one to witness, I did most of the washing while seated on the built-in bench. Cleaning my hair felt amazing. I’d been in worse shape before, but never had everyone fawned over me and babied me like this for nearly five days. My cousin’s guard dog status and my sister’s attempts at nursing were smothering. When I’d asked for Talia, they’d avoided me. Adrian had just confirmed why they were keeping her away, but I didn’t want her at a distance. She was mine. She belonged with me.

It was time to go get her. But I wouldn’t go to her like an invalid.

After drying myself and checking the bandages, I started with my socks, which were more of a struggle than they should have been. I had to sit on the closed toilet lid, but I managed. I refused to present anything but an implacable front. Logic said that if I acted strong, I would feel strong. Others would see my resolve and wouldn’t cross me without careful consideration. While I could afford to take some time off my job, there were other projects vying for my attention.

And then there was the progress I’d made with my wife. Talia had been pushed aside, forbidden entrance. Adrian knew the stakes, but if he was keeping her away, clearly it was to pacify my sister.
