As my brain tried to make sense of the situation, I began to rub my hands together, trying to send blood to my extremities. But I froze when I realized the fourth finger of my left hand was empty. I blanched. The kidnappers took my ring! It was valuable, sure. But selling it, especially so soon after a crime, would leave a trail—something my father had taught me. Therefore, was there somethingmoreto the ring that I’d missed? I thought on it further and realized the stone was big enough to conceal a tracking device. On the off chance that it did, my kidnappers were smart to dispose of it.

But if that was the case, then I was royally screwed, because my husband wouldn’t be able to reach me.

While losing consciousness seemed utterly stupid, sleep called to my very bones, promising a soothing release. I tried to relax my muscles, succumbing to its call. It was either that or cry, and I wouldn’t show weakness or waste what little water my body had left. I drifted off, a memory of Constantine’s possessive gaze lulling me into a false assurance of salvation.

Chapter 48 – Constantine

Once upon a time, Iwanted to try and save Talia. But it had been nothing more than the delusional fantasies of a fool. Maybe this was my punishment for dreaming of the impossible.

That video with the devil’s sadist heir played on repeat in my mind. It warred with my shredded honor and sense of nobility. I reminded myself I wasn’t a demented soul who tortured others, I was more—a killer, silent and accurate. During the entire drive into the desert, I worked up the courage to do what must be done. Talia had to know something about her family’s location; she would tell me.

Adrian fidgeted in the seat beside me. Only once had he tried to talk me out of what I was going to do. It ended with harsh words.

“You told me that you ached to give Talia freedom! How in the hell are you going to march in there and break her body, knowing it’s her father who molded her into his soldier?” My cousin’s shout still echoed in my mind forty minutes later.

Iryna—louloudi mou.The name blazed in my mind, a reminder and a beacon. I used it to ward off Adrian’s words and all pesky sparks of virtue. I did what other men couldn’t do. I was the butcher, the angel of death. I slaughtered without mercy. Except...this wouldn’t be a clean kill.

The car pulled to a stop before a nondescript ranch style home. This was it. Miles away from anyone, this little place was one of Spyder Security’s blood houses. I steeled my spine and exited the sedan to meet the desert’s cloying heat. The sun was sinking fast to the west; with it, the temperature would drop.

Refusing to take off my suit jacket, I rolled my neck as I took in the stark landscape. There was a haunting beauty to the desolation.

Daniel came out of the house a moment later, shutting the door quietly behind him. We exchanged a nod.

“Nothing new to report, sir. She stirred a second time about thirty minutes ago and called out for water.”

“Did you give her any?” My low tone matched his.

Daniel shook his head. “It wasn’t part of my instructions.”

“Very good,” I clipped.

“Here’s her cellular device, sir.” Daniel passed the slim piece of technology to me.

It felt like a thousand pounds. I needed a moment to breathe. “Wait here. I’m not to be disturbed under any circumstance unless Jakob makes contact.”

“Understood.”
