“Oh?”Interest stirred in Colby’s voice.“So you know his thoughts. You two talked about what he would do—”

“When I questioned him, I told him about the attack on Lark. And now, bam, he’s out.Doesn’t take a profiling genius to connect the dots.Does make me wonder though…”

And that was it.Oliver just stopped and didn’t tell them what he was wondering.

“Uh, gonna share with the rest of the damn group?”Colby snapped.

Oliver rubbed a hand over his jaw.The stubble seemed to scrape beneath his fingers.“Makes me wonder if he had an idea of who might be going after her.Maybe he felt like it was someone he had to handle himself.”

“And who the hell might that be?”An explosion from Colby.

“Well, the person who came up in our conversation was Blain Montgomery.”

A chair leg screeched.Colby had whipped back from the table so quickly that he’d kicked a chair that had been behind him.

“State Representative Montgomery?”Colby gaped.“You can’t be serious.”

“Don’t feel like I’m joking, so, yeah, I’m serious. The man has a past with Lane and with Lark. And he happens to be in town.Staying at the very place where the Escalade that was used in an attempt to run down me and Lark—he’s staying at the same damn place where it was stolen.Lots of coincidences, don’t you think?Too many.”

Colby took a step back.Hit the chair again.“You’re saying Lane Lawson broke out of jail to go after Blain Montgomery?”

Her thundering heartbeat echoed in Lark’s ears.

“I’m saying why not put a tail on the representative?”Oliver’s question seemed all calm and reasonable.“Wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry?”

The air thickened.Colby’s glare grew angrier. And then… “Sonofabitch.”He whirled and stormed from the small interrogation room. The door slammed shut behind him.

Lark’s shoulders sagged. Not that she was relaxing.More like collapsing and—

Oliver hauled her out of the chair and into his arms.A tight, hard hug.Her hands fluttered around him because she didn’t know what was happening.

“Eyes are on us.Agents watching through the one-way mirror on the right,” he whispered into her ear.His breath slid over the shell of her ear and sent a shiver chasing down her spine.“Do you just hate lawyers? You must.Get over that.Because the next time I throw you a hint about bringing in one, take it.”

She didn’t know what to say.Or maybe she wasn’t supposed to say anything. Not if eyes were watching.Maybe she was just supposed to listen.

“Trust me.I am on your side.Always.”

Even with the lie she’d told? The box didn’t come to my shop.I have no idea how it got into my basement.Just…Dear God, please, don’t let my brother have put it there. Her arms wrapped around Oliver, and she held him as tightly as he held her.

“And stop digging your nails into your palms. You’re making yourself bleed, sweetheart.”He squeezed her once more, then let her go.Eased back.Swept his stare over her.“Feel better?”Louder.

She shook her head.“No.”Honest.“I want out of here.”

The door flew open and bounced against the wall.“I have agents going to meet with the representative. They’ll keep him safe.”Colby pointed his index finger at Lark.“You want—”

“You can’t keep me here.”She didn’t think he could.A lawyer would be able to tell her.Yes, she should definitely take more hints from Oliver. But…

She blinked.Inspiration had just struck.Inspiration and a bit of hope.“My brother is out there, and if you want him found, then let me hunt for him.”

Colby laughed.

Anger spiked inside of her and erupted as she blasted, “You’re the one saying I know him better than anyone else.If you truly believe that, then stop wasting my time!Let me go out there and find him.I don’t want Lane getting shot—”

“And I don’t want your brother killing again.”Colby’s nostrils flared.“You think I just will let you waltz out of here on your own?For all I know, you go out and you will disappear.Maybe you have plans to meet up with your brother and vanish into the sunset together.”

“That isnotthe plan.I want to find him.I can’t do that locked in this room!”Her head moved in a jerky nod.“I do know him better than anyone else.If I’m out on the streets, I can visit all the places that he loved.”

“You can give us a list of those places…”
