“I was waving to your mother.”

“You mean you were fraternizing with the enemy.”

“The enemy?” He laughed. “What happened today?”

Katrina motioned toward the ignition. “I’m not saying a word until you get me out of here.”

“As you wish.” Simon pushed the key into the ignition and turned it. “But I can’t just hang out today. I have to go to the used car lot. Jeff said he had a truck that just came in and I might be able to get it for a good enough price that my monthly payment will be next to nothing.”

Katrina wrinkled her nose. “You can’t trust Jeff.”

“What? Why?”

She gave him a hard stare. “Have you ever gotten a truck from him?”

“Well… no. You’ve seen the cars I’ve driven over the years.”

“Then trust me. You need to go to Billings to get the best price on something. There are more lots out there and some of the salesmen arereallypushy, but if you don’t let them jerk you around, then you’ll end up with something you won’t regret five hundred miles down the road.”

Simon shot a look at her out of the corner of his eye. “That sounds like the words of boring Katrina.”

She sucked in and swung around to stare at him. He couldn’t see her eyes, but he could feel them drilling into him like they were laser beams. “What? Did you just call me boring?”

He bit back a smile.

“Simon, do you really want to be locked into a truck that’s going to bleed you dry? Trust me. I have four brothers. And every single time they have gotten a truck, it was at this one place in Billings. I swear, if you don’t go there, you’re going to regret it.”

“Now you just sound threatening.”

“Good. So maybe now you’ll listen to what I have to say.”

He chuckled despite himself. “Okay, then Billings it is. I bet there will be a few places open by the time we get there.”

She settled back in her seat. “Sounds perfect to me.”

“Are you going to tell me what was going on back there?” Simon relaxed a little, too. For the next couple of hours, he had Katrina all to himself. He didn’t have to worry about her going out on a date with anyone else, and the cherry on top was that he’d be able to get her advice on something he wasn’t one hundred percent confident he could do.

Katrina sighed and the light shining from her face faded. “My mom has gotten it into her head that since I’m letting Brianne set me up on dates, she gets to do it too.”

“Uh-oh.”

“Uh-oh is right. First of all, no. I do not want to date the son of the woman she met at the grocery store. I don’t want to date the nephew of the woman from her book club. And I definitely don’t want to meet the kid who I vaguely remember sticking gum in my hair when we were in preschool.”

Simon chuckled.

“It’s not funny! This is getting ridiculous. Just because I’m letting my friend get me out there doesn’t mean I’ve been enjoying it. A relationship isnota top priority. Besides, I’m only doing it for Brianne because she lives vicariously through me.”

“Are you sure?”

She shifted in her seat and her voice thinned. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Are you sure,” he drawled, “that you don’t want to change your priorities around just a little? This is your future we’re talking about. You just might meet your soulmate.”

He’d meant it in a teasing way, but by the way the car got quiet, he instantly regretted his statement.

“I guess you make a good point.”

“Really?”
