Nick got to his feet and crossed the room restlessly. He stopped to look out the window, mostly so that she couldn’t see his face. “Is this void thing something I can control?”

“I’m sure it is.”

He glanced back at her. “You’re sure?”

“It has to be, right? I can control my magic, so why wouldn’t you be able to control this?”

“It’s not the same thing.”

“No, but they’re linked. Like two sides of the same coin.”

Nick sighed. “I appreciate the supportive words, but my luck doesn’t usually go well.”

She didn’t say anything for a moment, and then she stood and joined him by the window. “I get the impression that you’re a negative person.”

It was the closest she had come to him since they came downstairs, and he smiled at her.

“I’ve been called pessimistic,” he said. “I like to think I’m being realistic.”

“Then let’s be realistic. You don’t have any reason to think youcan’tcontrol it.”

“But I don’t have-”

“A reason to think you can,” she finished, giving him a smile. “So if you truly think of yourself as a realist, you have to acknowledge both arguments.”

He frowned. “I guess I have to agree. I feel like arguing with you is going to be annoying.”

She smiled. “You’re talking like I’ll see you again.”

“You haven’t scared me off yet,” he said.

“Really? This has to be the strangest day of your life.”

“It’s pretty high on the list, yeah.”

“You’ll have to tell me sometime about the other days on that list.”

He took a few slow steps towards the door. “I should probably go.”

“Where?” she asked.

“To talk to my brother. My stepdad, too. They might know something.”

“If there’s anything I can do to help, let me know. I feel responsible for triggering your void to surface.”

“You’re not responsible,” he said, “but I’d appreciate the help. Your family are witches, too, right? Would they be able to tell you more about all this?”

“Definitely,” she said. “I’m sure they’ll be shocked to hear I met a real void.”

Nick smiled. “And lived to tell the tale?”

“Probably,” Cara said, returning the smile.

He stood there for a few seconds, and neither of them looked away.

“You know,” he said, moving closer. “It’s still pretty early, and my brother’s working tonight. I won’t be able to talk to him properly until tomorrow. My stepdad isn’t even in town.”

Her smile widened. “Oh, really?”
