“You’d be surprised. Not all vampires live in gangs and dens like the one you both saw. They have families and friends who want to help them.”

“Like us,” Nick said.

“Exactly,” Henry nodded. “You’re not alone in this, Brett. We’re with you every step of the way.”

“Thanks,” Brett said. There was a moment of silence, and then Brett flashed a quick smile at Henry. “So, now that we know the truth about our family being descended from witches, are there any cool magical objects we should’ve inherited? You can tell us. I swear I won’t try to sell anything.”

Henry laughed, and despite everything, Nick smiled.

Chapter 38 - Cara

Cara stopped at her house to grab a few things. Someone was moving around upstairs, but she didn’t know if it was Quinn or Julia, and she didn’t stick around to find out.

She changed her clothes, grabbed a few things, and then she cast an interference spell. It was inevitable that the coven would try to track her. She couldn’t stop them, especially if her mother was involved, or worse, the elders, but she could delay them. She had to hope that Jay would be able to cover for her until she reached Nick. Once she reached him, they wouldn’t be able to track her at all.

She sent Nick a message shortly after leaving her parents’ house, and he replied quickly.

“Meet at the bar?”

“Sure, why not?”

Cara was surprised that he didn’t suggest meeting at his house or hers, but they couldn’t risk Quinn or Julia getting involved, and Brett was probably still adjusting to everything. She could still feel the relief that hit her when Nick messaged her about Brett arriving at home.

The pub was their usual spot. Their friend group often met there after class, before class - sometimes during class - and she didn’t need to clarify what he meant. Cara waited until she was almost at the bar, and then she sent a message to her parents.I’m okay. I need to do this. I’m sorry, but I promise I’ll be okay. Talk soon.

She also sent a message to Jay to warn him in case he was still covering for her. She made sure to message him a few minutes beforehand, so he had enough time to get out of yelling distance.

Cara walked up to the bar. There were a few people standing outside. A couple, sitting close to each other and completely oblivious to the cold. A trio of smokers, laughing and joking. And a group of lads who were trying to be subtle about the flask they passed around. She took a moment to let herself imagine another life where she didn’t have to worry about anything supernatural, and then she walked past them, and returned to reality.

Nick was sitting by the window. Two drinks sat on the table, and she walked over. He didn’t see her for a moment. His eyes were on his phone, and she was able to look at him without being seen. His shirt was blue, and she knew it would bring out the blue in his eyes. The top buttons were undone, and a few small bruises were scattered across his jaw, his cheek, and his arm, just above his wrist. He had mentioned training with Henry, and she didn’t know if the bruises meant it was going well or not.

“Hey, Nick.”

He looked up at her and smiled. “Hey. Got you a drink.”

“Thanks.”

“How does it feel to be an escaped jailbird?”

She sighed and sat down. “Honestly? It’s less fun than you’d expect.”

They caught up on everything, and the bar started to get busy.

“Evening crowd,” Nick said as the bar got louder.

“It’s a weekend, to be fair,” she said. “Did anything else happen?”

“Not yet,” Nick said.

“I can’t believe Henry has so many skills,” she said. “He’s so interesting.”

Nick flashed a smile. “Should I be jealous?”

“Maybe. He’s very handsome.”
