“You haven’t met him.”

“There are pictures of him in your house.”

“I can give you his number if you want.”

Cara laughed. “Thanks, that would be great.”

She hesitated, and his smile faded.

“Cara?”

“Another round?”

Nick nodded, but he knew she was stalling. She went to the bar, and when she returned with two more drinks, she couldn’t put it off any longer.

“There’s one more thing I haven’t mentioned,” she said.

“Sounds ominous,” he said. “Is this why you spent so much time in Jay’s family library? You never told me what you were looking for.”

“Well, I wasn’t sure how to say it.”

“It’s about me,” Nick said.

“It is. I did some research, but I should mention that all the texts were inconsistent. I’m serious, I’ve never seen more contradicting information about a single subject.”

“Okay,” Nick said slowly. “What did you find?”

“Some of them supported the coven’s belief - that voids are corrupted by their power, and it’s inevitable. Other books said the opposite. There were only a few, but they posited that the void was intoxicating, and people with weaker wills would be more susceptible to corruption.”

“Sounds fun.”

“Others didn’t mention it at all, and they thought the idea of pure power corrupting someone - without bias, motivation or even sentience - was ridiculous.”

“Sure.”

“So there’s no real answer. Maybe the void corrupts, maybe it doesn’t. If there was going to be a definitive answer anywhere, it would’ve been found in that library, and it wasn’t.”

“So nobody knows,” Nick said.

“It’s possible that the void encourages darker traits and negative emotions, but everyone has good and bad inside them, and I’m sure the void doesn’t force anyone to do anything. As long as you don’t let the void take control, it’ll be fine.”

“Fantastic,” Nick said. “It’s all sunshine and roses.”

“Sorry I don’t have better news.”

Nick sighed. “You apologise a lot for someone who doesn’t do much wrong.”

“I just wish I found something more positive.”

“Contradictions are better than all the books agreeing that I’m bound for evil.” His voice was light, but it didn’t reach his face.

“I suppose.”

“Anything else interesting?”

“Nothing major, but there was an abundance of witches with theories about voids being talented with weapons and violence.”

“Henry said something similar. Kind of.”
