“It’s not that simple, and you know it,” Henry said.

Cara had been quiet, turning options over in her mind, but now she spoke. “Whatever the reason for turning Brett, we won’t find out by sitting here.”

“I agree,” Henry said. “We need to act.”

“We got Brett back, and we’ll get them back,” Cara said.

“They’ll be ready for you this time,” Henry said. “Nick told me how dangerous it was in the vampire den, and you got lucky. Or maybe they wanted you to find Brett. But this time is different. They’ll be expecting you to do the same thing. We can’t risk it.”

“We need allies,” Nick said. “But who? The witches won’t help us. They hate me.”

“They fear you,” Cara said. “It’s not the same thing.”

“It sure looks like it.”

She sighed. “We need them, Nick. We don’t have another option.”

Henry looked at her. “Do you think there’s a chance they’ll help us? Can we convince them?”

“I don’t know, but we have to try.”

Nick shook his head. “There has to be another way.”

“There isn’t,” Henry said. “Samuel has made his move. Up until now, he’s been playing with the pieces on the board. But he’s an active player now, and that can only mean one thing.”

“What does it mean?”

“We’re in the endgame, and we’re severely outnumbered.”

Cara looked at Nick. “We need the coven.”

“This isn’t going to end well,” Nick said.

Chapter 45 - Nick

“Do you think it was a good idea, leaving Brett by himself?”

Henry nodded. “He’s doing well, but we can’t trust him to be able to control his instincts yet. It’s all too new. Especially if things get messy when we meet the witches.”

Nick glanced at Cara, and she just shook her head at him. Neither of them knew how this was going to go. They were all hoping for the best, but there was a strong chance things were going to get messy.

The house looked completely ordinary. Nick didn’t know what he was expecting, but it wasn’t this. This didn’t look like the base of an army preparing for war. Several cars were parked along the street, but nothing else was out of place. It looked more like someone was hosting a dinner party for the neighbourhood.

“And they know we’re coming?” he asked.

“They know I’m coming,” she said. “Like I said earlier, I didn’t think it was smart to give them advance warning about where you were going to be.”

“In case they attack me,” he said.

“In case they prepared an ambush,” she said. “There’s still a pretty good chance they’ll attack you.”

Nick bit back his reply. He was nervous, and his instinct was to fill the silence, but he couldn’t keep asking questions. She already told him what was going to happen. Deep breaths. That was all he needed.

Cara led the way inside, and the three of them walked into the living room. All at once, the room fell silent, and half a dozen witches turned to face them.

“Cara, what’s going on?” her father asked. He glanced at Henry, but when his eyes landed on Nick, his face froze. “You brought him here.”
