“For once, I agree with you,” the elder said. “You made a grave mistake crossing into our territory.”

“Then we’ll leave,” Henry said.

Nick glanced at him, but Henry kept his eyes on the elder.

“Another demand I cannot accept,” the woman said.

“What?” Nick said.

“You will not be leaving. You are just as dangerous to our people as the vampire lord.”

The other witches seemed to hesitate.

“We can’t let Cara get caught in the crossfire,” Eric said.

“This doesn’t have to become violent,” Henry said, addressing the entire room.

“You’re not a void,” the elder said. “You’re a hunter. Leave now and return to your life.”

Her arms were relaxed, but Nick saw her fingers moving subtly by her sides. He felt something in the air, but nobody else seemed to react.

“I will leave,” Henry said. “And I’m taking my son with me.”

“Unacceptable,” the elder said.

Nick could feel the magic rising in the air, and he grabbed Henry’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”

The elder’s gaze snapped to him. “You really expect us to let you leave?”

“You can’t stop us.”

“Fool.”

She threw out her hands and a wave of energy crashed against them. Nick’s void lunged to the surface of his skin, covering him in an instant and sweeping the energy into his chest. It sent glorious power through his body.

Henry hurtled off his feet and flew backwards, and Nick yelled, grabbing and missing at his father’s shirt. Cara was knocked aside, caught in the edge of the blast of power, and she fell against an armchair that toppled over with the impact.

The other witches lifted their hands, just moments after the elder, and they summoned a wave of energy. Some of them hesitated, others moved towards Cara, and Nick ran to Henry.

Voices rang out and he threw himself over Henry. A rush of heat and flame washed over them, and Nick let the void rush to the surface, pulling in the flames before they could hurt his father. Heat and light and noise faded to nothing, and Nick could hear Henry groaning beneath him.

“Stop!” Cara yelled, putting herself in front of Nick and Henry.

Nick looked up, and his whole body coiled and tensed, ready to lunge at the coven. Dark thoughts raced through his head, and he wanted to destroy the people who hurt his dad.

“Enough!” Cara held flames in her hands, and the void pulsed in his chest, hungry for more.

“Cara, please.” Eric hurried to stand in front of his daughter, putting himself between her and the coven.

“Run, Nick,” Cara yelled. She threw out her arms, throwing streams of flames across the room, separating the coven from Nick and Henry.

Nick pulled Henry up, but his father stumbled, and Nick grabbed him and threw him over his shoulders. The void rushed through him, filling him with energy, and he rushed outside with Henry on his back.

He glanced back as he hurried through the doorway. The witches were in chaos, shouting and yelling, and Cara and her father were in the way, blocking them from giving chase. Eric kept shoving people back, even though no one was trying to get to Cara. They just wanted to get past her.

In the middle of the panicked crowd, the elder stood calmly. Her eyes were on Nick. She didn’t cast a spell, and she didn’t raise her arms for magic or attempt to chase them. She didn’t do anything, actually. She just looked at him, and she looked at Henry.

Nick slammed the door behind him and ran.
