“It was avoid,” her father said. “I wouldn’t call itnothing. Who was it? What did he do to you? Has your magic come back?”

“Yes,” she said. “My magic came back quickly, and it wasn’t his fault.”

“He drained you,” he said, cutting her off. “Who is he? Did he hurt you? I swear I’ll kill him.”

“Dad, it’s fine. He’s not like that. He didn’t even know he was a void until...” She wasn’t about to tell her parents she had a college boy in her bedroom last night. “Until he took my magic.”

Eric scoffed. “I doubt that. That’s not the kind of thing that happens accidentally. It was deliberate.”

“How would you know?” Cara snapped. She didn’t know where the sudden urge to defend him came from. “Have you ever met a void?”

Her father turned to her so sharply that she almost flinched. “Yes.”

“When?”

“We’re not discussing this today,” he said. “For now, all that matters is that you stay far away from him.”

“But he’s not dangerous.”

Her mother reached out to touch her arm. “Are you sure?”

“I... Yes. He’s not dangerous.”

“How well do you know him?”

“I mean... We have a lot of mutual friends.”

“Oh god,” Eric said. “He planned this, somehow. He’s been working to get closer to you. He got to you through your friends. How did we not hear about a new void in the country?”

Finn wandered over and brushed past her father’s legs, and he reached down automatically to pet the dog’s head. Finn kept going, winding through legs and past tables until he reached Cara, and she reached down to run her fingers through his fur.

“But are you sure?” her mother asked. “Really sure? They’re so rare. There hasn’t been a void since-” She broke off. “It’s been a very long time, Cara.”

“I’m sure.”

Rose nodded. “Alright. Then we need to act quickly. Did you get the bus here?”

“What? Yes.”

“And he definitely wasn’t on it?”

“You’re being crazy,” Cara said. “I don’t understand why you’re both reacting like this. I know it’s scary, but I’m telling you it’s fine. You can meet him if you want.”

“That’s not a good idea,” Rose said.

“Why not? At least explain to me why you’re so convinced that this is bad news”

“No,” Eric said. “We’re not talking about this. Go inside, right now. Your mother and I need to discuss this, and you need to stay here, where it’s safe.”

“I have college-”

“You’ll skip it,” he said. “I’ll email the university. This is a family emergency.”

“You’re being ridiculous,” Cara said, rising to her feet. “He’s not a bad person. He told me he didn’t know what he was, and I believe him.”

“He tricked you,” Eric said, and his jaw clenched. “That’s what they do. They lie and deceive until you let your guard down, and then they strike when you’re at your most vulnerable.”

“If he wanted to hurt me, he could have done it last night.”
