The two men collided with Brett in an explosion of noise that sounded like stone crashing against stone. Within seconds, Brett was on his knees in front of her with his arms twisted behind his back.

“That was fun,” she said, smiling down at him. “Peoplenevertry to attack me anymore.”

“What the hell did you do to Henry?” Brett demanded. “Fix him or I’ll rip your head off with my teeth.”

She clapped her hands. “Amazing! No one threatens me, either. It’s been ages since anyone spoke to me like this.”

Nick moved in front of Henry’s motionless body and slipped the dagger from the sheath on his belt. He wished, yet again, that he wasn’t stupid enough to leave the studded mace in Henry’s car. It was probably still there, sitting just outside the house, completely useless to him.

Faye glanced at his dagger with an amused smile. “Really, Nick, you can’t possibly think-” She broke off with a frown, and turned to Brett. “What am I smelling? Is that animal blood?”

Brett didn’t say anything, but she leaned down until she was close enough to kiss him.

Faye grimaced. “You’ve been feeding on animals. That’s why I haven’t seen or heard about you in any of the blood banks. I assumed you were feeding on random humans and covering your tracks, but this is... interesting.”

“Get away from him,” Nick said.

“No,” Faye said. “Brett’s coming with me.”

“You’re insane,” Brett said. “I’m not going with you. I’ll fight you every step of the way, and sooner or later, you’ll make a mistake and I’ll break free.”

Faye smiled down at him. “If you don’t cooperate, I’ll destroy everything you care about. I’ll kill Nick and Henry, I’ll track down every single friend you’ve ever had, and every person who shares blood with you, no matter how distantly, will face my wrath. They will all die screaming.”

Brett’s struggling slowed. “You wouldn’t.”

“I would. Immortality provides endless time to pursue your hobbies. I’m happy to spend the next few months torturing and killing everyone you’ve ever met.”

Brett swallowed. “That’s a bit extreme.”

“Do you think so?” Faye thought about it for a second. “Maybe you’re right. I guess we won’t know until after it’s done. If I’m wrong, I promise to apologise for killing all those people.”

“You’re a psychopath,” Brett said.

“Maybe,” Faye said. “If you’re right, then there’s nothing to stop me from letting Henry die. I’m the only one who can save him. I was just telling Nick all about it. If you were here earlier, you would’ve gotten the whole explanation.”

“So if I come with you, he’ll live?”

“Yes,” she said.

“Why should I trust you?”

“Trusting me would be a terrible idea,” she said. “But you don’t have a choice.”

Brett was quiet for a moment. “I’ll do it.”

“Fantastic! What great news. Isn’t this great?” She looked at Dixon and Richards, and they just stared at her, and she sighed impatiently. “The answer is yes, boys. We came here for one reason, and we succeeded. Were you even listening to the plan? Actually, nevermind, don’t bother answering. I’ll assume it was something stupid.”

Nick raised the dagger. “This isn’t happening.”

“Leave it, Nick,” Brett said. “Let me do this.”

“I can’t let you do this.”

“You’d do the same,” Brett said. “You and Henry will be safe, for now, at least. This is just like what you did in the bar.”

“It’s not the same. Come on, Brett, don’t do this.”

“I’ll be fine.”
