Nick looked at Faye. “Don’t take him. We can come to an agreement. You don’t have to do this.”

“Unfortunately, I do. Samuel demands it. He wants his war, Nick. He’s going to get it.”

“I can work with you. We can take down Samuel, together. You’ll be in charge of everything. No more taking orders from him. How does that sound? Just let Brett and Henry go, and I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Tempting,” Faye said. “But no. Now, Brett and I have places to be.”

Faye smiled at Nick and gestured to Dixon and Richards. “My men will stick around until we’re out of your reach. Just in case you get any ideas about following me and trying to renege on our deal.”

Nick started to argue again, but Brett caught his eye and shook his head, ever so slightly. Nick bit his tongue.

“Great choice,” Faye said. “Goodbye, Nick. I’m sure I’ll see you around.”

Brett didn’t say a word as Dixon and Richards let him go, and he followed Faye out of the room.

Chapter 51 - Nick

“They told us to be afraid of you,” Dixon said. “The terrifying void who could kill us all without breaking a sweat. What a joke.”

“I will,” Nick said, but the words were empty, and everyone could hear it. “I’ll kill you.”

“Even if you wanted to, you couldn’t,” Dixon said. “You’re nothing without your witch or the daywalker or the hunter. They’re dangerous. You’re not. What are you going to do? Drain my magic? I don’t have any.”

“You’ll regret this.”

“Empty threats won’t change anything,” Richards said. “I’m tempted to put you out of your misery right now, but I have orders to let you keep breathing. She was very specific about that part of the plan.”

“I thought you followed Samuel,” Nick said, trying desperately to plant seeds of doubt in their minds. “Why do you care what she says?”

“She’s the boss’s right hand. Whatever he wants, she makes sure he gets it. Her orders are his orders.”

“So he wants me alive,” Nick said.

“Apparently,” Richards said. “I guess you’re too important. I wonder what they have in store for you.”

“Nothing pleasant, I’d bet,” Dixon said, and then he grinned. “I bet she’ll turn you herself. Make another daywalker. The boss would probably love that.”

Nick didn’t bother to tell them that it didn’t work that way. For all he knew, it was possible, and he was wrong.

“Honestly, I don’t care what they want with you, void. I prefer this. Letting you live will give you plenty of time to enjoy being alone.”

“That’s probably enough time,” Dixon said. “Faye should be too far away. Let’s get out of here. Let the void enjoy his new life all alone.”

Richards smirked. “The best part is that he doesn’t even realise it yet.”

Dixon laughed. “I was just thinking the same thing.”

“What are you talking about?” Nick said.

“Your father isn’t in a coma,” Dixon said. His grin was big and broad. “He’s dead, you idiot. The three of us killed him when we got here.”

Nick froze.

“And you were too stupid to see it,” Dixon said. “Faye told you a lie, and you believed it. Did you even question it? You didn’t want to face the truth, so you took the lie. Vampire venom doesn’t put people into a coma.”

Nick was silent. He reached behind him, and the dagger slipped out of his hand as he touched his father’s hand. This time, he felt it. The void swirled in his chest, surprisingly dormant, but it lent Nick its power. Black lines flowed across his hands, and when he touched Henry, he felt nothing but an empty shell. No life, no warmth, no energy. Not even the small amounts of magic that lived inside every single human.
