“Then he has a bigger plan.” He made a sudden, angry noise, and he turned towards the house. “Your mother’s right about the bus. He could have followed you. Does he know where you live?”

“Dad, you can’t be serious-”

“Did anyone follow you?” he yelled.

“No! Nobody else got off at my stop. Besides, we have protective wards around the house. Nobody can get past those spells without permission.”

Her father ignored her and grabbed a shovel that her mother must have been using earlier. He tested the weight in his hands, and then he strode towards the house.

“What’s he doing?” she demanded.

Rose’s words were patient, but her eyes were tight with worry. “Protective magic won’t affect voids. They’re immune. Your father is checking the house.”

“And the shovel?”

“Our magic is useless,” she said. “The shovel is a weapon, in case he needs to defend himself.”

“Dad wouldn’t hit anyone with a shovel. This is insane.”

“It’s not. It’s really, truly not.”

Cara didn’t know what to say, but she knew she made a mistake. She just wasn’t sure yet if she had been wrong about Nick, or wrong about telling her parents.

Her mother stood up, and she started moving in a small circle as she murmured old words under her breath.

“What are you doing?” Cara asked.

Rose finished the spell before she replied. “There are things you don’t understand, Cara. It’s not your fault, it’s ours. We hoped you would never need to know. If word reached us about a void in the area, we would have told you immediately.”

“Why not just tell me?”

“Voids are so rare. Many witches go their entire lives without meeting one.”

“But Dad met one. Have you?”

“I have,” she said quietly.

“What happened?”

“It’s not my story to tell.”

Cara glanced at the house. Every few seconds, she could see her father’s silhouette moving past the windows, shovel in hand, checking corners and hiding places and every single room.

“He’s not dangerous,” she said quietly.

Her mother looked at her for a moment, and she put a gentle hand on her arm. “Even if he’s not now, he will be. You have no idea just how dangerous he will become.”

Chapter 4 - Nick

“Hey, Brett,” Nick said, walking up to the counter.

“Hey, man,” Brett said. “The bar’s pretty quiet, but just let me bring these drinks over to the table in the corner and I’ll be back.”

Nick sat at the bar and waited. He probably should have been more nervous, but he trusted his brother with everything. Brett wouldn’t judge him. He might think he was crazy, but he would keep an open mind.

This was on a whole other level, obviously, but he knew his brother would be there for him.
