He turned as she moved, keeping his eyes locked on her, but he didn’t move closer.

“Get out of my way,” he said.

“No.”

“Do you want to force my hand?”

“You won’t hurt me,” she said.

“You don’t know that ,” he said. “Look at me. Look at this. Get out of my way, Cara.”

“I’m not moving until I can see your eyes again. Your real eyes.”

“These are my real eyes.”

“I remember them being slightly more blue.”

He took her hand, and she let him, and the void lines darkened and grew stronger, reacting to her magic. “I could take your power,” he said.

“You won’t do it,” she said. “And you won’t rush into a vampire den by yourself. Nobody would survive that.”

“I’m a void.”

“You’re an idiot.”

His jaw clenched and the void thrashed - she could feel it rolling from him in waves. It was fighting to drain her magic, but he was holding it back.

“If you won’t listen to logic, then listen to this. Henry wouldn’t want it.”

Nick glared, and she saw every muscle in his body tighten beneath the thin, ripped t-shirt. “You don’t know what he wants.”

“I do. He loves you, and he won’t want you to throw your life away. Just ask him. Or Brett. They both want you alive and safe.”

Nick dropped her hand. “I can’t.”

“Then ask them later. It doesn’t matter, you know what they’d say.”

He dragged a hand through his hair, and she thought she saw the black lines get thinner for a moment.

“No,” he said. “Ican’t. I can’t ask them.”

“I don’t understand, Nick.”

“They took Brett. And Henry... he’s in the other room. Don’t,” he said sharply, when she turned to go inside. “Don’t go in there.”

She had a bad feeling in her stomach. “Why not?”

Nick shook his head. “I guess it doesn’t matter if you go in. Not now.”

“Will you come with me?” she asked, holding out her hand.

Nick stared at her for several seconds. “Why?”

She didn’t reply, just held out her hand.

Nick sighed. “Fine.”

He took her hand, and she tried not to tense when she saw the void lines pulsing and thickening, swirling around his wrist and across the back of his hand. Nick’s jaw was set, and she watched as the black slowly faded from his eyes.
