The lines retreated back over his face, pulling back slightly. They were still covering his neck, but his face was clear.

The void stopped there. It didn’t disappear entirely, it was still visible on the rest of his body, but when he looked at her, she saw the real Nick in his eyes.

“He’s in here,” Nick said, leading her out of the kitchen.

Cara wasn’t sure how much time passed, but Nick seemed to be in control again. When he saw Henry’s body, he almost lost it, but she tried to talk him down, and eventually, it worked. At least, she hoped it did.

She didn’t know how to help him or what to do. Magic couldn’t heal death. She was a healer, but it was too late to do anything for Henry, and she felt completely useless when she saw Nick’s face.

So she focused on talking him down whenever the void started to take over.

She knew he was dead as soon as she walked into the room, but for Nick’s sake, she tried to heal him again. Behind her, Nick was pacing, trying to keep his breathing steady while he told her about Brett and Faye and the vampires he followed out of his house.

“I’ll kill them all,” Nick muttered.

Cara turned to face him, and she was relieved to find blue eyes instead of black. “Nick, you can’t take down the entire vampire clan by yourself. If you want to win, you need to play the smart moves. It’s a big clan.”

“It’s not really one clan,” Nick said. “Samuel united all the smaller groups. If he dies, the group might splinter.”

Cara raised an eyebrow. “Are you agreeing with me?”

“No. Maybe. I don’t know.”

She felt like he was shaking off the void’s influence, but it wasn’t over yet. “You need to get the void under control.”

“I am in control.”

“I don’t think you are.”

Nick started pacing again. “They think I’m a monster. Maybe they’re right.”

“You’re not a monster.”

“I’m a void,” he snapped.

“So? I’m a witch. Other people can think whatever they want. We’re all monsters to someone.”

“It’s not that easy. People like witches. It’s not the same thing.”

“Not everyone likes witches. These days, maybe, but in the past, we were hunted and killed. I’m sure you’ve heard of the witch trials. Scotland spent over a century in fear, and thousands died. The only reason nobody hunts us anymore is that they don’t think we’re real. Humans don’t believe in us, so we’re safe. What do you think would happen if that changed?”

“We’re not dealing with humans,” he said. “Everyone in this fight knows that witches are the good guys.”

“You think you’re not good.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. You’re a good person, Nick.”

“You really believe that?”

“I do.”

He went quiet, and the black veins darkened against his skin. “Prove it.”

“What?”
