“Prove that you know I’m not a monster.”

“How?”

“If you’re so confident, let me take your power. It’s easy to be brave with magic on your side.” His eyes stayed clear, but she could feel the cold gravity of his power pulling her closer.

“I don’t need magic,” she said.

“Give me your power and tell me that again.”

Cara hesitated, just for a moment, wondering how much influence the void had over him in his grief. “You can’t scare me away,” she said, and she stepped closer.

She took his hand, closing her fingers around it and pulling it against the centre of her chest. “Prove me wrong,” she said. “You can have it. Take everything.”

Something glinted deep in his eyes, but she didn’t move.

“I’m waiting, Nick,” she said.

Seconds dragged on, and nothing happened.

“You haven’t drained me before, not deliberately, and you won’t start now,” she said. “I know who you are.”

“I don’t,” he said. “I thought I did, but I have no idea.”

After a moment, the tension left his grip, and she released his hand.

“That was incredibly reckless,” he said quietly. “You know you’re supposed to run from danger, right?”

She smiled. “Doing what you’re supposed to do is overrated.”

“Still, I didn’t know if I could stop myself.”

“I knew you could. I trust you, Nick.”

“You really shouldn’t. Everyone around me gets hurt.”

“That’s my choice to make,” she said.

He sighed, and the void lines started to fade. Suddenly, he looked tired. “Are you sure?”

“Nick, I already made my decision. I’ve chosen you again and again. Can’t you see that? I made my choice a long time ago, and I’m still making it. I won’t change my mind.”

He hesitated, and she took his hand, slipping her fingers between his and holding it tight.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she said.

Chapter 54 - Nick

“We’ll start with the wards outside,” Cara said.

“Can you turn them back on?” Nick asked.

“It’s not a car.”

“It’s basically the same thing,” he said. “Can you do it?”

“Yes, I can turn them back on.”
