Slowly, the runes came to life, glowing brightly. The light pulsed and suddenly spread, shooting out in a line and leaving identical rune symbols in its wake. Nick pulled his foot out of the way, and the line kept going, disappearing around the corner of the house. A few moments passed, and then the line appeared on the other side of Cara, shooting forward to rejoin the beginning of the line. They glowed again, and then faded.

“That was... wow,” Nick said.

Cara smiled. “Thanks.”

Nick crouched down. “I can’t see them at all.”

“Invisible wards make it harder for anyone to mess with them. I also added some personal touches to the spell to protect against interference from other witches.”

He grabbed her hand and pulled her close. “You’re incredible. Why didn’t the previous witch do all this?” Nick asked.

“A witch for hire is usually an outcast. Sometimes they’re exiled for a reason, but often, they simply don’t have a coven of their own. They might not have the knowledge or the experience to create more complex spells. We’re stronger together. I’ve learned most of the things I know from my mother, and she learned from the collective knowledge of the coven.”

“That makes sense, I guess. So is this spell something your mom taught you?”

“Well, no, I actually created this one myself. I’m sure other people have variations of it, but I haven’t seen anything quite like it in the books I’ve read.”

Nick followed her as she moved across the backyard. “You made a spell?”

“I did. I’ve had some experience recently with trying to bypass wards, and it gave me some ideas.”

“I don’t know much about magic, but that sounds impressive. Do many witches create spells?”

Cara stopped at the line of burnt grass where the original wards had been. “No, but my mother always encouraged it.”

“She sounds great.”

Cara paused. “She is.”

She closed her eyes, and a gentle breeze swept around them, lifting her hair and ruffling his shirt. The wind swirled around them, coming in closer and closer, and Nick watched as the burnt grass grew again, restored to the healthy green that it used to be.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“I’m a witch, Nick. Nature gives us our strength, and it deserves our respect.”

“It’s just grass,” he said, holding out his hand to her.

She took it, and he pulled her back to her feet. “We should probably go,” she said gently.

He looked at the house again, just for a moment, and then he nodded.

Chapter 55 - Nick

“This is Jay’s car?”

“Yeah, he let me borrow it.”

“Interesting.”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Nothing. Where are we going, anyway?” he said.

“Well, we can’t take on Samuel by ourselves.”

“I know, I know, I’m not still planning to go in by myself.” He looked at her and saw a familiar look on her face. “You have a plan.”
