“I have an idea.”

“What is it?”

“The witches,” she said.

“Not this again,” he said. “We tried, we failed. It didn’t work. They won’t help us.”

“Then we change their minds,” she said.

Nick sighed. “We already tried that.”

“We tried talking,” Cara said. “We’re going to give them proof that you’re not what they think you are.”

“What proof?”

“You can bring out the void, and I’ll use magic.”

“They won’t care. They’ll see it as another lie.”

“Not if they see it with their own eyes. They think you’re out of control, that you can’t resist the urge to drain magic. Let the void show itself and then touch me, and I’ll use magic in front of them. They won’t be able to deny the truth if they see it with their own eyes. If they see your control, we can reason with them.”

“And if I lose control?”

“You won’t.”

He hesitated, and she quickly continued.

“There’s a bigger threat than you, Nick. Samuel is out there. We just have to convince the witches that we’re on the same side. Unite against the greater threat. They must know that he’ll come for them, and if there’s even a chance that they could get the void on their side, they’ll take it. It might be enough to win the war.”

“I can’t win the war for them.”

She squeezed his hand. “They think you can, and that’s all that matters right now. If I’m wrong, we’ll run, and we’ll find another way to get Brett, Quinn and Julia.”

“Alright,” he said. “One last try, but if this doesn’t work, I’m going straight to Samuel. If I remove him from the situation, the vampires might start fighting each other instead while they decide who should replace him. When that happens, I can get Brett and get out of the city.”

“Okay,” she said.

“I need my weapons.” He looked back at the house, but his feet wouldn’t move. “I need more than a dagger and a mace if we’re going to war.”

There was a moment of silence, and he didn’t move. He knew what he needed to do, but his body wouldn’t listen.

“Do you want me to get them?” she asked. “You can stay here.”

“I... Yeah, would you mind?”

“Not at all,” she said. “Where do you keep them?”

Chapter 56 - Cara

They arrived at the house and walked up the driveway together.

Nick took her arm so the wards wouldn’t react to her, and they passed through without a problem. Someone stood inside one of the windows, and they must have noticed Nick and Cara in the corner of their eye. They turned and yelled something.

The front door burst open and dozens of witches poured outside.

Not dozens, Cara tried to tell herself. The coven’s not big enough.
