Brett was right about the bar - it was unusually quiet. It was only a few minutes from the main street, so it was usually at least half full at this time of the day.

“What’s up?” Brett asked. “Don’t you have college right now?”

“It's a bit late for college.”

Brett checked the time. “It’s late, but it’s not that late. I’m pretty sure you missed at least one class today.”

“Why do you know my class schedule so well?”

“Am I wrong?”

Nick shrugged. “No.”

“So you skipped,” Brett said.

“I only had one class this afternoon. I can catch up later.”

Brett frowned. “You skipped so you could come and see me. Why? Do you want free drinks?”

“No,” Nick laughed. “Do I need a reason to spend time with my brother?”

“No, but I think you have one. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Come on, Nick. What’s wrong?”

Nick hesitated, and one of the customers came to the counter to get another round for his table.

Nick waited, wondering how to bring it up in conversation. He didn’t see a way to do it without sounding insane. He couldn’t even prove it. He should have asked Cara to come with him to show Brett the fire-magic-thing.

Brett slid the drinks across the counter and returned to Nick.

“Is this about last night?”

Nick frowned. “How did you know that?”

“You went out with your friends, right? There was a party? I’m guessing something happened.”

“Oh, well, yeah, I suppose something did happen.”

“Yeah?”

“I... Uh, I don’t know how to say this. It’s kind of a big deal.”

Brett grinned. “Did my little brother finally get his first kiss?”

“I’m serious,” Nick said. “Do you have a few minutes?”

Brett glanced around the bar. “Yeah, sure. Most of them are regulars, anyway, so they won’t care if I disappear for a bit.”

Brett snagged two beers from the fridge, and Nick followed him into the back.

“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for them,” Brett said.

Nick took the beer and paused. “It’s gonna sound pretty weird, but something happened last night.”

He saw the grin on Brett’s face, and he kept talking before his brother could make any more jokes.
