“Looks like she needs me.”

Nick took her hand to help her off the wall, and she hopped down.

“See you soon,” Nick said, and she smiled at him, holding onto his hand just a few seconds longer than she needed to. She finally let go and went to join her mother.

“Nervous?”

Nick looked around and smiled at Jay. He had a few bruises on his face and a scratch on his cheek, but he didn’t look bothered. Since he could have gotten healed by magic, Nick guessed that he was proud of them.

“Didn’t see you there,” Nick said.

“The all-powerful void didn’t notice me walking up behind him?” Jay grinned. “I think your reputation might be exaggerated.”

Nick laughed. “I’ve been saying that this whole time. Which ring are you part of?”

“You mean the circles? I’m in the middle one. Did Cara explain it to you?”

“She tried,” Nick shrugged. “I can’t say I understand all of it, but I got the basics.”

“Don’t worry about it, I don’t really understand it, either. I mean, I get the circles and the channelling stuff, but you could write a dozen books on the runes, sigils and measurements involved in the actual spell. I leave that to people much smarter than me.”

“Basically everyone, then.”

“You’re an ass.”

“I’m delightful.”

“Strongly disagree.” Jay glanced at the other witches, and he sighed. “They need every witch and warlock they can get, but I wish I was going inside with you. I’d love to go for round two with those bastards.”

“I’d like the backup, but don’t worry, they’ll get exactly what they deserve.”

Chapter 58 - Cara

Cara walked back to Nick and Jay. They were both sitting on the stone wall, chatting about something, and she smiled at how much things changed.

“Hey, Jay,” she said. “I’ve been meaning to thank you for helping me.”

“Don’t mention it. You can owe me a favour.”

Cara smiled. “I’m not helping you work on your car.”

“A favour is a favour.”

Nick nodded to the witches gathered around her mother. “Looks like there’s some movement.”

“Yeah, they’re leaving to take their positions,” Cara said. “Most of them need to drive to get there. This spell circle is bigger than anything I’ve seen before.”

Jay hopped off the wall. “I should join them. Good luck, both of you. See you on the other side.”

Nick nodded to him, and Cara pulled him into a hug.

“Thanks, Jay. For everything.”

“Anytime.”

He jogged over to one of the cars and joined the witches climbing into it.
