“You look worried,” Nick said.

She shrugged. “I need to talk to the elders. They’re scary.”

“They are terrifying,” he said.

“You’re not helping.”

“I’m being honest.”

“Like I said, not helping. Lie to me.”

“The elders will listen to everything, agree with whatever you say, and they won’t put up any arguments against you.”

She frowned. “Somehow, this is worse.”

“You’re welcome. Do you want me to come?” Nick asked.

She paused. “Yes.”

“Okay.”

She walked over to them, and when the three women saw her coming, they sent away the other witches. The three elders waited for her, and she took comfort in Nick standing at her shoulder when she stopped in front of them.

“Cara,” Ana said. Her eyes moved to Nick. “Void.”

“Witch.”

Ana looked at Cara. “Let me guess. You want to go inside with him.”

“Yes,” Cara said. “How did you know?”

“I’ve been old since before you were born, dear. I know things.”

“Okay. Well... Do you mind?”

Ana sighed. “Your mother is orchestrating the spell. Does she know?”

“She does,” Cara said.

Ana glanced at Violet and Irina. “Alright.”

Cara hesitated. “Really?”

“If Rose has given permission, we support it.”

“Thank you,” Cara said.

The elders looked at Nick for a moment, but they didn’t say anything, and Cara quickly walked away, pulling Nick with her.

“I can’t believe that worked.”

“Did your mother actually say yes?” Nick asked quietly.

“She did,” Cara said. “She wasn’t happy, but I reminded her that the girls might need a healer. If someone has to go inside, it should be me. I can use locator spells, I can heal, and I have experience with fighting vampires.”

Nick looked at her. “She knows about your solo fight with those vampires the last time?”

“Gods, no,” Cara said. “But she knows I was in the den. She knows I fought some of them. That’s all she needs to know. I’m fine, so there’s no point in scaring her.”
